BEIRUT: Syrian state media on Saturday cited a hospital in government-held Hama as saying 21 people suffered choking symptoms from poison gas after rebels shelled a village. A war monitor, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also said 21 people were hospitalised with choking symptoms, but it was not known if this was from chemicals or smoke and dust raised by the shelling. State news agency SANA cited the head of the Saqilbia National Hospital as saying the attack took place in the village of al-Rasif and it published images and footage of people lying in hospital beds wearing oxygen masks. On Friday and Saturday, airstrikes on rebel-held areas in the northwest killed 15 people including four children and injured 25 others the Observatory said. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), a global watchdog, has documented systematic use of nerve agent sarin and chlorine during Syria’s eight-year conflict. From 2015-17, a joint U.N.-OPCW team was appointed to find blame in gas attacks and said Syrian government troops had used both chemicals several times. It also found that Islamic State had used sulfur mustard gas. The OPCW is looking into an alleged gas attack in November in government-held Aleppo that made up to 100 people ill, and which Damascus and its ally Russia blamed on insurgents.

All trucks would include UN identifying markers. Once cleared, the trucks travel across the border into Syria along the same routes as used prior to 7 July. They travel along the Castello Road and into eastern Aleppo city directly to the warehouses of partners. Once at the warehouses, trucks will be confirmed as not having been tampered with, and then the seals would be broken and assistance off-loaded, he said.He began his briefing by saluting the life of Khaled Omar Harrah, a member of the White Helmets, killed on 11 August, by airstrikes. He is remembered for brushing aside debris and reaching through a hole in the wall to pull out a 10-day-old baby from the rubble of a collapsed building in 2014. Citing the haunting images of five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, a silent face covered in blood and dust, after being pulled from the rubble caused by a recent airstrike, Mr. O’Brien told Council members that “imagine this was your child, a child that has known nothing but horrific war.” “All we need is for the guns to fall silent,” he said, not the politicking and posturing, or the power games and defensiveness.Progress has been made this year, with a net total of 1,275,750 people reached in besieged, hard-to-reach and priority locations across Syria. But regarding August inter-agency convoy plan submitted to the Syrian authorities, the UN was denied access to more than 50 per cent of requested beneficiaries, he said. He reported that the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Yacoub El Hillo ended his three-year appointment in Syria today. “I’m not going to pretend – I’m angry, very angry” about what is happening in Aleppo today and throughout Syria over the last five years, said Stephen O’Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator in his briefing to the Security Council. “This callous carnage that is Syria has long since moved from the cynical, to the sinful,” he said, warning that it is the failure of politics and the 15-member Council. “So please: now is the moment, this instant, to put differences aside, come together as one, and stop this humanitarian shame upon us all, once and for all,” he told Council members.Aleppo has become the “apex of horror” at its most horrific extent of the suffering of people, with up to 275,000 people in eastern Aleppo almost entirely cut off from vital supplies, while access also remains extremely difficult to the estimated 1.5 million people in western parts of the city, Mr. O’Brien said. “This is a race against time, as fighting rages on,” he said, warning that Aleppo risks seeing a humanitarian catastrophe unparalleled in the over five years of bloodshed and carnage in the Syrian conflict.Russia’s announcement of support for 48-hour pauseWelcoming the announcement by Russia on 18 August to support the call for a 48-hour ceasefire, Mr. O’Brien said he and his office are working with all sides to seek to ensure that should the announcement by Russia translates into a comprehensive pause, that will enable aid to safely make its way to those who so desperately need it.Stephen O’Brien briefs the UN Security Council and urges them to put their differences aside and stop the ‘callous carnage that is Syria’. Credit: UN News CentreRussia and the United States are the co-chairs of the taskforces for humanitarian aid and a cessation of hostilities – created by the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), which comprises the UN, the Arab League, the European Union and 16 other countries – and which have been meeting separately since early this year on a way forward on the Syrian crisis.A humanitarian pause is “not a negotiating tactic” but needed to put confidence into the hundreds of truck drivers to jump back in their cabs, load their trucks, and set off on the slow journey over shell-cratered roads, all the time wondering whether the sniper will take the shot, or an IED (improvised explosive device) will catapult them into the air. “As we sit here round this safe table, humanitarian rescue workers are risking their lives in search for those buried under the debris,” he told Council members, noting that more than 130 ‘white helmets’ volunteers have lost their lives since 2013, mostly caught in the so-called “double tap attacks,” in which a helicopter or a jet bombs a building, then waits some time – just enough for rescue and medical workers to arrive – before attacking again.UN convoys await green lightHe said that the UN and partners are ready to move assistance within 48 to 72 hours once the green light is given. “Plans are in place, but we need the agreement of all parties to let us do our job,” he said.Outlining the plan, he said that 50 trucks of assistance are ready to move from western Aleppo into the east and preparation is under way for the cross-border movement of assistance into eastern Aleppo. An initial movement would send 20 trucks with much needed food into eastern Aleppo during the first pause. This would then be scaled up as appropriate for future pauses, and include additional humanitarian assistance based on assessed need. According to the plan, the loading of items would be monitored by the UN Monitoring Mission, which would then seal the trucks so that any tampering would be evident on arrival, he said. Commuters travelling the Northwest District route are being asked to remain patient as the newly re-commissioned MV Barima undergoes the final inspection by the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), before being put into operation. In early March, the Ministers of Public Infrastructure David Patterson and Annette Ferguson re-commissioned the vessel.GINA today quoted Minister Ferguson as saying that the vessel is not yet plying the Northwest District, Region One route because it has to be inspected by MARAD.She said MARAD is the regulatory body mandated to inspect the vessel to ensure that it is properly outfitted before it goes to sea. When that aspect of work is completed then the vessel will sail to Region One.The MV Barima was rehabilitated at a cost of $150M with upgraded seating accommodation, more capacity and a new crane to load cargo on board. Virat KohliIndia captain Virat Kohli will not play the last two ODIs of the New Zealand series, and the T20s that follow; he has been rested for those games, the BCCI said on Wednesday. Rohit Sharma will captain India in his absence. No replacement player has been named for Kohli. This will be the first time this decade India will be playing an ODI outside Asia (excluding Zimbabwe) without Kohli. However, the decision to rest Kohli should come as no surprise since the selectors and the Indian team management have stressed in the last year the need to manage workloads of key players, to keep them fit for the World Cup which will be played in England from May 30. In March 2018, Kohli had skipped the Nidhas Trophy T20 series in Sri Lanka, he sat out the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, and then took time off during the Asia Cup.Strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah had also been rested for the limited-overs legs of the Australian and New Zealand series. In a media release, the BCCI said that Kohli would be back for limited-overs series at home against Australia in March. “Considering his workload in the last few months, the team management and senior selection committee is of the view that it would be ideal for him to get adequate rest ahead of the home series against Australia,” the BCCI release said. Wednesday 28 Feb 2018, 10:46 AM Feb 28th 2018, 10:47 AM Image: Shutterstock/Syda Productions By Sean Murray Image: Shutterstock/Syda Productions 38 Comments ON A VERY snowy day for many parts of the country, the government has announced major changes to the pensions system in Ireland, with an automatic enrollment system one of its key features. From 2020, a new State pension system will come into place based on a “total contributions approach” where a person’s lifetime contribution will more closely match the benefit they receive. In the future, the government will aim to keep the state pension at a level of 34% of average earnings, and said it will increase the pension in line with changes to average wages and/or the consumer price index. While the State pension age is set to increase to 67 in 2027 and 68 in 2028, but there will be no further increase before 2035.From 2022, all workers will be automatically enrolled onto an automatic enrolment retirement savings system. The Department of Social Protection explained: “It is intended that employee savings in this scheme will be supported by employer and State contributions.Under the system, workers will have the freedom to opt-out should they so choose, however experience in other countries indicates that once automatically enrolled workers tend to remain in the system. The department added that this will address “Ireland’s significant retirement savings gap”.The government has been criticised in the past for some pensioners being left penalised for missing contributions in their youth, to raise a family for example. The department said that the pensions model from 2020 will prioritise those people “impacted upon by anomalies” in the yearly average system in place since 1961, and whose home-caring prior to 1994 has not been recognised until now.Minister Regina Doherty said: “It is increasingly evident that most Irish workers are not saving enough, or indeed at all, for their retirement years. Many people will be faced with a serious reduction in their living standards when they retire – a fall in income they clearly do not want. When introducing this (auto enrolment) system, we will ensure that those on low to middle incomes receive financial support from both the Government and their employer. The government’s “A Roadmap for Pensions Reform 2018-2023″ can be viewed here.Read: ‘If everything’s fine, why’s it being investigated?’ – Social Protection peppered with tough questions over PSCRead: ‘A lot of money to the ordinary Joe soap’: Millions overpaid and hundreds of data breaches at civil service HR system From 2022, workers will be ‘auto enrolled’ on pension savings schemes The government has also announced a new “total contributions approach” to pensions from 2020. http://jrnl.ie/3876335 19,281 Views Short URL Share67 Tweet Email7 Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article
Stay on target Pornhub Maybe Wants To Buy TumblrPornhub Credits Government Shutdown For Traffic Increase This week Pornhub is rolling out an update to the site that will add in closed caption for its videos. As one of the world’s largest purveyors of porn, the site has taken unique steps towards accessibility, with this just being the latest example. Via press release, Corey Price, Pornhub’s VP said, “Here at Pornhub, it’s important that we continue to service all of our users’ needs and make content accessible to every individual.” Pornhub might be on the seedier side of the internet, but the company previously launched a descriptive video section for the blind — way back in 2016. So far these features are only on a couple thousand of the site’s videos that are in the major categories for sexuality/gender identity. The project was the product of Pornhub’s more wholesome edge, Pornhub Cares. Which, regardless of your feelings about the platform and porn in general, offers some surprisingly awesome content. It includes scholarships, educational videos for safer sex at various ages, panda conservation, and countless other causes. There’s some legitimately great stuff here, and it’s honestly heartwarming to see people at least trying to be decent as we stand on the precipice of a cruel cyberpunk dystopia. Making the world more accessible is just a good thing to do. Plus, the videos are hilarious — especially if you can take a step back and realize that porn is kind of a ridiculous, over-the-top, campy-ass farce. Then, you can watch someone with something that is way disproportionately large place that on, in, or near someone else. Then the rhythmic moaning starts. And, in all caps, white text over a black background scrawls across your screen. “OH. OH, OH! OH! OH! O-GOD!”Or you could pop over to the described video section and listen to people describe — at length — pretty much everything. And yeah, that’s pretty damned hilarious too.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro Have More Cameras, More ProblemsApple Arcade Launches Next Week Stay on target Apple Watch Series 4 was one of the highlights of Apple’s Special Event today, broadcast live from the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, CA. The new version of the popular Apple Watch, which Apple noted was now the number one watch in the world, period, has a veritable treasure trove of new design and feature ideas meant to help make life easier and safer for anyone who uses it.The new watch, aside from rocking a few aesthetic and performance improvements, amazingly has a series of new heart-centric health features meant to keep its users more aware of their physical health. The watch will be able to utilize new features that will help assist it with screening the wearer’s heart rhythm for any abnormalities that may be related to conditions such as bradycardia, tachycardia (slow or fast heartbeat) or even atrial fibrillation, which is essentially an irregular heart rhythm.Perhaps astonishingly is the new addition of the electrocardiogram (EKG) feature, which will allow users to perform an EKG directly from the Apple Watch. This will mark the first consumer-grade EKG that’s ever been available to consumers without having to visit a clinic to have the procedure performed. What’s more, Apple has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to have the Apple Watch Series 4 classified as a medical-grade device in this manner. Users can open an app on the watch, place one finger on the digital crown dial, and measure their EKG in seconds without having to go to the doctor’s office or pay expensive testing fees.To that end, the watch has also implemented a new fall detection feature, which lets the watch figure out if you’ve taken a nasty tumble, and can automatically call 911 or a predetermined number for you if you remain unmoving for over a minute after falling down. This will be especially useful for those with limited mobility or elderly parents or other family members in the home.Major changes have come to the Watch’s physical form, too. The screen is now almost edge to edge, with a new larger display in both 40mm and 44mm sizes. The display itself has become 30% bigger, and there’s more to watchOS as a result. The new UI has been altered so that it really makes use of the bigger display screen. There’s also a new watch face with eight built-in complications. The watch’s overall body has been altered in meaningful ways as well with the digital crow now including haptic feedback and a special LTE ring indicator that flashes red when looking for service. It’s also significantly louder than it used to be, with an improved speaker. Finally, the back of the watch features a sapphire crystal and black ceramic with the electrodes that allow for the aforementioned electrocardiogram recordings to be done. The battery may have remained the same, but this is clearly overall the most feature-packed Apple Watch yet. Best of all, you can continue to use the same bands from your previous models if you don’t feel like purchasing a new one. There are new gold and stainless steel finishes to choose from, and it’s all going to be releasing a lot sooner than you may have expected. The Apple Watch Series 4 goes live to preorder on Friday, and it will begin shipping on September 21, starting at $399 for the GPS edition and $499 for GPS + LTE versions. If this is one Apple device you’re interested in snapping up, you’d better go ahead and get that preorder in, as this one will undoubtedly sell like hotcakes. For more on Apple’s other releases check out why the iPhone SE is the last good iPhone as well as some upcoming Android phones worth checking out. On Feb. 26, the Baltimore Ceasefire 365 movement was honored during the inaugural Black History Month Community Leaders Awards ceremony, presented by the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. And on that day I was proud to be an honorary member of Baltimore Ceasefire 365.So, here is the backstory on how I got to be a part of the Ceasefire crew for a day. My friend, Ericka Bridgeford, the group’s co-founder, texted me on Facebook to announce Ceasefire would be among the group’s honored at the Black History Month event at the Banneker-Douglass Museum, in Annapolis. “Wow….Dope!” I replied. “When can I write about this?” Her reply was, “We have one more seat for a guest…and we’re inviting you to attend the awards ceremony. Can you come?”It was my honor. It has been a short, yet remarkable odyssey for the Baltimore Ceasefire movement, an organic answer to the violence, murder and mayhem that has seemingly possessed Baltimore for too many years. After Bridgeford ranted to her son last spring about the skyrocketing murder rate, she reached out to her inner circle, specifically Ogun Gordy and her best friend Letrice Gant (aka Ellen Gee), and the first Ceasefire weekend was birthed in Aug., 2017.Sean Yoes (Courtesy Photo)When AFRO First Edition was on WEAA’s airwaves, we dedicated an hour a week on the show for several weeks, leading up to the first Ceasefire in an effort to help build momentum and spread the word. In less than a year, the movement has garnered accolades from around the world and the nation. And this week, the vital work of Ceasefire 365 was officially honored by the state.“Baltimore Ceasefire 365 is a grassroots peace movement created to raise awareness about the high murder rate in Baltimore City, comfort families of the deceased, and reduce violent deaths in the city. The group makes a simple ask: For Baltimore City to be free of murder for 72 consecutive hours. This simple ask has transformed into ceasefire weekends in Baltimore with much success,” is how Ceasefire’s bio read in the program accompanying the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony this week recognized the incredible, life sustaining work that so many organizations do everyday across our state, typically with little fanfare and too often, few resources (hopefully that will change one day).Organizations like Generosity Global, which helps the homeless population in Baltimore, and Inge Benevolent Ministries, which operates the only shelter in the country exclusively for Muslim women refugees and their children, among the other groups honored, are the bedrock of volunteerism and service in our state. For the Ceasefire crew, getting out on the streets of the city and engaging many of the young men and women, who are most vulnerable to violence and murder is hard, grimy, challenging, joyous and ultimately, life affirming work.It is a never-ending battle against all of the demons that the world outside of Baltimore (and far too many of us within the city) often attempt to define us as; murderous, violent, ignorant, lawless, ruthless, addicted, to name a few. True, we are all of those things. Yet, we are not bound by them, because we are so much more; resilient, loving, fiercely loyal, wise, brilliant, creative, powerful. The good overwhelms the bad, if it wasn’t true, the city wouldn’t be standing. We are “more than conquerors” to quote Romans 8:31-39.When Ceasefire was presented with the award, Gant eloquently spoke for the group. The telco set 5G launches for parts of 12 U.S. cities this year. “New and immersive experiences from Magic Leap’s developers eventually riding on the AT&T mobile 5G network will redefine entertainment and productivity,” said John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications, in a statement.AT&T also said it will provide WarnerMedia content demos in select stores, including characters and scenes from new Warner Bros. films “reimagined” for Magic Leap’s platform. According to the telco: “Eventually films, shows and games could follow you out of the stores and onto the streets or into your home.”AT&T also announced that it will host a Spatial Computing Hackathon in San Francisco Nov. 9-11. Users can open new windows with a pop-up on-screen guide and switch the audio among each of the channels using the Magic Leap One’s controls (watch a mocked-up preview below). The concept looks sort of cool — but it’s an open question whether live-streaming four TV channels is a compelling application in the regular world. The DirecTV Now app, at this point, feels like an attempt at a proof-of-concept exploring what’s possible in the AR environment. For now, the only headset available from Magic Leap is the developer-oriented Magic Leap One, which is now on sale for $2,295. Magic Leap has said a less-expensive model, the Magic Leap Two, will be targeted at general consumers.
The history of comics is built on exploitation, with creative geniuses inventing characters that are then exploited in perpetuity by corporate entities. Think of legends like Jack Kirby having his original art held hostage by Marvel until he signed away the rights to his hundreds of creations. In 1991, some of the hottest artists in the industry decided they’d had enough. Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino and Whilce Portacio walked into the offices of Marvel publisher Terry Stewart and demanded ownership of the characters they’d created. Stewart said no. So the group of seven walked away from the biggest publisher in the business to go their own way.The early 90s saw comics at their most profitable. A thriving speculator market had people buying multiple copies of “hot” books as investments, no matter what their quality. The seven Image artists knew Marvel was getting richer and richer while their page rate stayed the same. They wanted to introduce new characters and ideas but didn’t want a publisher to own them in perpetuity.Image had two rules: all comics were owned by their creators, and no Image creator would interfere with another’s business. The Image Seven teamed with California publisher Malibu to lend operational support, and after just a few months of publishing, they owned more of the market share than DC. The experiment was a success. It’s not wrong to say that the first wave of Image books were pretty bad. MacFarlane, Liefeld and the rest basically just kept doing what they were doing at Marvel but with more attitude and worse writing. Even worse, the founders quickly discovered that sticking to a monthly schedule without publisher oversight was harder than it looked, and the wait between issues of Youngblood and CyberForce became interminable. If the company was just those seven guys, it would have burned brightly and faded away – of the group, only MacFarlane’s Spawn and Larsen’s Savage Dragon have managed to stay on a reasonable schedule. But once other artists and writers saw what was happening, they began pitching to Image too. Titles like Sam Keith’s The Maxx and Jeff Smith’s Bone stepped outside the stereotype to push a little more alternative, and Image thrived.Things got weird for a bit. Rob Liefeld pissed off the other partners by swiping their artists and setting up a second company, Maximum, that wasn’t part of Image. Deadlines started slipping so hard that many of Image’s flagship books were considered unofficially canceled. The company brought in indie artist Larry Marder to help manage the partners, which helped, but the glory days of the 90s were ending as the comics speculator market collapsed under its own weight.By the early 2000s, Image’s position in the market had declined. The style that the founders made popular had fallen from favor, and they were having trouble figuring out their niche. Upstarts like Oni and Dark Horse were nipping at their heels with high-quality, creator-owned genre work. It only took a few years for Image to get their groove back, though, aided by a little zombie comic called The Walking Dead. Image’s second renaissance came by sticking with the principles that started the company: creators first, with no interference. On the surface, there’s no reason The Walking Dead should have been a hit. It was in black & white, from a relatively unknown writer, and horror comics hadn’t been a thing since the 1950s. But Robert Kirkman’s zombie opus set the tone for the new order at Image. It was a story only he could tell from beginning to end, and he wasn’t going to make any compromises along the way. We don’t need to tell you that it became a massive hit, inspiring a pair of TV spin-offs and a trailer full of merchandise. And Kirkman (and co-creators Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard) owned it all. We’re now living in the second Image renaissance. The old studio system where the original Image Seven recruited imitators to run their franchises was pretty much over, replaced by unique, original, progressive work like Saga and The Wicked + The Divine. The company in many ways now serves as an incubator for the Big Two, instead of the other way around. Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman pitched The Nightly News as a complete unknown to Image in 2006 and went on to not only do creator-owned work but also become one of Marvel’s “architects.” Brian Michael Bendis published noir books like Jinx and worked on MacFarlane creation Sam & Twitch through Image before being offered Ultimate Spider-Man.Creators are still going the other way, though. Ed Brubaker, who revolutionized Captain America in the early 2000s, left Marvel and DC permanently to focus on his Image books with frequent collaborator Sean Phillips. Robert Kirkman did some mainstream work but realized that The Walking Dead and Invincible represented a better use of his time both creatively and financially. Why does Image work while other publishers seem to be struggling? It’s simple: when a creator owns a book, you know they’re going to be able to tell the story they want to tell. At Marvel or DC, if a title doesn’t sell well enough the editors will gleefully pull the writer or the artist off and re-tool it. And that’s not even mentioning things like editorially mandated cross-overs, movie tie-ins or worse.Like it or not, most of our favorite characters like Batman or Spider-Man aren’t for telling comic book stories anymore. They’re tentpoles in global media franchises, with TV shows and video games and theme park rides to support. The shrinking comic book market makes publishing them less and less profitable, but DC and Marvel have to keep doing it. Not because they want to, but because Time Warner and Disney need them to.The American comic reader is smart. They’re into the medium for good stories, told well, with great art. All of the other stuff is window dressing. Image lets creators express themselves exactly how they want to be, pushing any envelope that’s necessary to get there. They’ve changed a lot in 25 years, but I have a feeling that their story is just beginning.
Stay on target This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) in Japan. Though the system ultimately lost the console war to the Super Nintendo, it certainly gave the House of Mario stiff competition during the early 90s. To celebrate the launch of its most famous system, Sega will release a “mini” edition of the classic 16-bit system. The diminutive console will first launch in Japan before releasing worldwide. While this is great news for fans of retro games, it comes with one huge caveat: the system will use AtGames technology. If you recall, AtGames is the company responsible for last year’s universally-loathed Sega Genesis Flashback console. This system looked nice, but featured a user interface that was less than user-friendly. Worst of all, games like Sonic the Hedgehog ran at inconsistent frame rates. That wasn’t even AtGames’ first attempt at making a Genesis clone either. The company has been at it for over ten years. Despite knowing all of that, Sega still decided to go and let the company handle the anniversary edition of their classic system.「メガドライブ」誕生30周年記念！ As reported by Polygon, this system will use different emulation than the Flashback console. It will also have “additional features.” It is entirely possible the console will actually deliver a worthwhile Sega Genesis experience. The Japanese edition of the system has no cartridge slot, but other territories will. This means you can play your old Sega Genesis cartridges on the console. This isn’t a new feature for AtGames-produced Genesis clones, but it’s good to have regardless. With the (wild) success of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo Classic Edition systems, it makes sense for Sega to jump on the mini retro console bandwagon. It just would’ve been better if the company created their own system instead of once again having AtGames take on the task. I understand Sega isn’t exactly in the hardware business anymore, but the Genesis deserves better than this. With that said, perhaps AtGames will (finally) get things right this time. Even if this is everything we want it to be, don’t expect it to fly off shelves like Nintendo’s systems. Folks who’ve been fooled into buying into buying an AtGames console before won’t likely do so again, even if it’s decent. If you want to play classic Genesis games, you can always check out the excellent Sega Genesis collection on Steam. This same collection is also making its way to PS4 and Xbox One later this year. Even Switch owners will get some Genesis love in the form of the Sega Ages collection. You don’t exactly need to buy this AtGames system to play Genesis games. There are better alternatives out there. Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Ports (excluding USB) Optical Drive Speed Ports (excluding USB) Bluetooth 5.0 17878 Meet my new favorite toy: The MSI GS75 Stealth. For $2,999 (starting at $2,099), this baby will give you everything you ever wanted in a slim gaming laptop. The GS75 Stealth’s incredibly stunning design is packed with a powerful Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU, a vivid 17.3-inch, 144-Hz panel and a great pair of top-firing Dynaudio speakers. We even gave the GS75 Stealth a spot on our Best VR-Ready Laptops page. The only downside is that its battery life is below average and it runs pretty hot while gaming. But overall, the GS75 Stealth is a fantastic premium gaming laptop that packs a ton of power into a svelte design.article continued below Price and Configuration Options The MSI GS75 Stealth I tested costs $2,999 and comes with an Intel Core i7-8750H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM, 32GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. The midrange model will run you $2,399 and drops you to an RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, while the base model starts at $2,099 and offers an RTX 2060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM. Design This is one sexy machine. As I sat at my desk contemplating how to describe the Stealth GS75, I found myself lost in its aluminum hood — transfixed by the sparkling sandblasted finish that encompassed a seemingly endless black space. The golden diamond-cut trim and Dragon Shield layered over the hood looked like stardust being gradually pulled into the singularity, while the golden hinges and exhaust grilles were the chains that kept the demon within from consuming everything. And the interior was just as exceptional. I was greeted by each individual key on the keyboard flaring up with the entirety of the RGB spectrum, as the ultrathin bezel display practically winked at me to take it for a test drive. This is one sexy machine. After some use, the GS75 Stealth attracted a few fingerprints here and there, but it wasn’t anything egregious. The GS75 Stealth puts its competitors to shame with its slim and sexy body, measuring at 5 pounds and 15.6 x 10.2 x 0.7 inches. The Aorus X9 (8.1 pounds, 1.2 inches), the Alienware 17 R5 (9.8 pounds, 1.2 inches) and the Origin PC Eon17-X (8.6 pounds, 1.6 inches) are all nearly double the height and weight of the Stealth GS75, but that’s mostly due to their full GPUs. Ports For a gaming laptop this thin, the GS75 Stealth has a decent variety of ports. On the left lies the power jack, an RJ45 port, one USB 3.1 port, a microSD card slot and separate headphone and microphone inputs. The right holds room for a security lock slot, an HDMI port, one USB Type-C port, two USB 3.1 ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port. Display Gazing upon the GS75 Stealth’s 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 panel is like witnessing a light prism blast you with the full force of a rainbow at 144Hz with a 3 millisecond response time — I am feverishly in love. Even though Peter Parker was web-swinging at high speeds through London in the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, the stitching in his Spidey suit was sharp and its signature red pattern popped as the titular hero made his away across the Thames. And when he and Nick Fury casually took a boat ride in the dead of night, I could clearly see the surrounding docks in the background. Gazing upon the GS75 Stealth’s 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 panel is like witnessing a light prism blast you with the full force of a rainbow. In the opening of Battlefield V, I was struck by the aurora borealis hovering over Norway — I literally stopped in the midst of combat just to stare at the vivid green lights being swathed in snow. When the enemy shined a spotlight upon my unit, it bounced off the snow in front of me, creating darker blacks and more vibrant whites that the Stealth displayed accurately. MORE: Highest Resolution Screens Embrace the color! The GS75 Stealth’s panel covered 161 percent of the sRGB color gamut, crushing the 136-percent premium gaming laptop average. It even put the Eon 17-X (104 percent), the Alienware 17 (110 percent) and the Aorus X9 (122 percent) to shame. At 339 nits of brightness, the GS75 Stealth toppled the category average (278 nits), the Aorus X9 (243 nits) and the Eon17-X (252 nits). However, the Alienware 17’s display came out on top with 352 nits of brightness. Keyboard and Touchpad Typing away on the GS75 Stealth’s SteelSeries keyboard felt natural and satisfying, but the elongated touchpad occasionally got in the way. Typically, the touchpad is placed under the spacebar, but here it’s right in the middle of the deck, which is where my palm would rest and inadvertently click the touchpad as a result. If the touchpad absolutely had to be in the center, MSI should have ditched the number pad so that the keyboard could properly line up with the trackpad. Despite my nitpicking, the keys travel at a solid 1.5 millimeters (within our 1.5- to 2.0-mm comfort zone) and required 71 grams of actuation force (in line with our minimum 60g). I was able to bang out 66 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, matching my usual average. Regarding design, the keyboard’s font is smooth in its own cyberpunk way. And each key is individually lit by RGB backlighting, which warms my heart and my eyes. You can customize all the backlighting through the SteelSeries Engine 3 app, which is incredibly thorough but also confusing due to the numerous options scattered across the UI. It took me 15 minutes to adjust the settings to make a rainbow ColorShift effect. Don’t get me wrong about the 5.4 x 2.5-inch touchpad — I absolutely loved it. It’s soft, offers a meaty click and provides so much room for my fingers to roam free. Besides that, MSI included Windows precision drivers into this build, so I can easily turn off my arch nemesis: Single-click. Windows 10 gestures like three-finger tabbing and two-finger scrolling were responsive. Audio The GS75 Stealth’s Dynaudio top-firing speakers successfully immersed me into World War II. When I jumped on a turret in Battlefield V, the heavy rounds shredded my enemies, and my ears, with a satisfying piercing sound. In the next scenario, the narrator’s philosophical dialogue was crisp, and could be heard rather well even over the sound of the GS75 Stealth’s fan. And as I barreled through a desert in a tank, my ears were overwhelmed by tank shell blasts and the sharp buzzing of warplanes zooming past me — I was in the thick of it. When I blasted Casey Edwards’ “Devil Trigger” across my room, the low-toned vocals and electronic beats had a symmetrical blend during the opening. As the chorus took off, the vocals transcended to straight-up hypnotic. I could even identify each strum and beat on the electric guitar and drums when they seamlessly intertwined toward the end of the song. MORE: Audeze Brings High-End 3D Audio to Gaming The high quality of the sound is helped by the Nahimic audio app, which offers presets for Music, Movie, Communication and Gaming. Although it doesn’t have a full equalizer, it lets you customize the presets individually with settings like Voices, Bass, Treble and Surround Sound, which is much simpler for non-audiophiles like myself. Gaming, Graphics and VR This sleek monster is powered by an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM, which ran Battlefield V at 57 frames per second on Ultra settings at 1080p (ray-tracing on) as I bulldozed through WWII both on foot and in an airplane. Despite the smooth frame rate, I did notice some mild screen tearing during my playtime. On the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark (Very High, 1080p), the GS75 Stealth hit 65 fps, sliding past the 61-fps premium gaming laptop average. Meanwhile, the Alienware 17 (68 fps), the Eon 17-X (69 fps) and the Aorus X9 (73 fps) were able to produce better results due to their full-size GTX 1080 GPUs. This sleek monster ran Battlefield V at a smooth 57 frames per second with ray tracing on. Despite the heavier competition, the GS75 Stealth nailed 96 fps on the Hitman Benchmark (Ultra, 1080p), which climbed over the category average (93 fps) and matched the Aorus X9 and the Eon17-X neck and neck. The Alienware 17 (99 fps) surpassed them by only 3 extra frames. The GS75 Stealth hit 77 fps on the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark (Very High, 1080p), defeating the 73-fps category average as well as the Eon17-X (55 fps). The Alienware 17 and the Aorus X9 averaged 85 and 86 fps, respectively. Like its powerful competitors, the GS75 Stealth hit a perfect 11 on the SteamVR Performance Test, beating the 10.6 premium gaming laptop average. Does RTX live up to the hype? While I am fully on board with the stunning ray-tracing that Nvidia’s new GPUs allow for, I’m somewhat disappointed by the bump in power you get over previous generations. When comparing gaming performance between the GS75 Stealth’s RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU and the Razer Blade 15’s GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU, it’s hard to justify the hype of the new RTX GPUs when it adds only a few extra frames. On the Hitman benchmark, the Stealth hit 96 fps and the Blade got 82 fps, while on the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark, the Stealth averaged 77 fps and the Blade hit 66 fps. You get an extra 11 to 14 frames in performance, but that’s relatively low when you consider that we’re comparing a midtier GTX Max-Q to the highest tier RTX Max-Q. Nvidia promised that these chips would give us the most powerful gaming laptops around, and while that’s technically true, it’s still a marginal improvement. However, if you’re shopping for a gaming laptop, I’d still recommend getting one with an RTX GPU. You get a performance bump compared to its predecessor and you’ll be able to experience the beauty of ray-tracing (whenever it comes to more games). Ray-tracing is currently featured only in Battlefield V, but will eventually come to games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Control and Metro Exodus. Performance Armed with an Intel Core i7-8750H processor with 32GB of RAM, the GS75 Stealth shredded through 40 Google Chrome tabs and five 1080p YouTube video like nothing while Battlefield V was running in the background. On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the GS75 Stealth scored 20,921, narrowly falling short of the 21,037 premium gaming laptop average. While the Alienware 17’s Core i9-8950HK (20,890) couldn’t make the average, either, the Eon 17-X’s Core i7-8700K (21,273) and the Aorus X9’s Core i9-8950HK (25,915) surpassed it. The GS75 Stealth compiled 65,000 names and addresses on our Excel test in 44 seconds, just short of the 0:41 category average. The Alienware 17 performed slightly faster at 0:42, while the Aorus X9 took off like a racehorse at 0:31. On the HandBrake benchmark, the GS75 transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 11 minutes flat, falling below the 9:50 category average and the speedier Alienware 17 (9:10) and Aorus X9 (8:15). MORE: The Best Gaming Laptops MSI’s 512GB SSD copied 4.97GB of data in just 6 seconds for a rate of 848 megabytes per second, surpassing the 544 premium gaming laptop average. The Aorus X9’s 1TB SSD fell behind at 424 MBps, while the Alienware 17’s 256GB SSD and the Eon17-X’s 512GB SSD both hit 565 MBps. Battery Life Even for a gaming laptop, the GS75 Stealth’s battery life is disappointing. After continuously surfing the web over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, the battery lasted only 2 hours and 29 minutes, falling below the 3:17 premium gaming laptop average. To be fair, the Aorus X9 (2:20) and the Eon17-X (1:52) did worse, but the Alienware 17 managed 3:47. Webcam The GS75 Stealth’s webcam balanced color decently well. I could make out the three shades of blue spanning my flannel shirt. However, it struggled to capture the lab in the background, causing it to show up darker in the test shots. And while I was able to make out some strands of hair on my head, it was extremely pixelated. If you plan on streaming, you should probably go for an external webcam. Heat Do not put the GS75 Stealth in your lap. After playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider for just 15 minutes, the underside hit 135 degrees Fahrenheit, flying over our 95-degree comfort threshold. Meanwhile, the center of the keyboard and touchpad registered 113 and 91 degrees, respectively. But the hottest the machine got was 142 degrees, which was located at the center of the vents on the underside. The GS75 Stealth still broke our comfort threshold on our basic heat test (streaming a 15-minute HD video) with 113 degrees. The center of the keyboard hit 106 degrees, while the touchpad measured 86 degrees. Software and Warranty MSI doesn’t have a lot of its own branded bloatware, but the programs it does include are actually useful. The MSI Dragon Center app lets you monitor your CPU, GPU and Memory, while also letting you optimize the performance via modes like Sport or Comfort, and choosing various fan speeds. There are also additional options to customize the battery and microphone. The MSI True Color app lets you customize the color in your display through presets like sRGB, Gamer or Movie, while the Killer Control Center lets you easily manage your bandwidth. The MSI Driver and App Center is a handy app that ensures all your MSI-related apps and graphics drivers are up-to-date. You will also get some lovely Windows 10 bloatware like Candy Crush Saga, Township and Cooking Fever. The GS75 Stealth comes with a one-year limited warranty. See how MSI performed on our Tech Support Showdown, Best and Worst Brands and Best and Worst Gaming Brands ranking. Bottom Line Words don’t do this baby justice. The GS75 Stealth’s design is stunning, and packs a mind-blowing amount of power into a 0.7-inch thin chassis. I’m also impressed that the GS75 Stealth’s display is such an improvement over its predecessor’s, and that those vibrant visuals are paired with great audio. However, all that power comes at the cost of battery life, and the laptop gets hot as hell under the hood. If you’re interested in something with slightly more power and don’t mind a thicker design, you can get the Alienware 17 R5 for $2,799 with stronger graphics, a brighter display, a deeper travel keyboard and better battery life. However, if sleekness is your priority, MSI GS75 Stealth is one of the best light and slim premium gaming laptops you can buy. KATHMANDU — Rescuers on Mount Everest found the body of a 13th Nepalese guide on Saturday as authorities ruled out hope of finding any more survivors from the deadliest accident ever on the world’s highest peak.Three sherpas remained missing from Friday’s avalanche that struck after a large party of guides left Everest base camp carrying tents, food and ropes to prepare for international clients ahead of the main climbing season.Towards the evening, rescuers suspended the search until Sunday.“We have suspended the rescue operation for today. It is risky to continue searching the mountain as evening sets in,” Tourism Ministry official Madhusudan Burlakoti told AFP.The avalanche smashed into the sherpas early Friday at an altitude of about 5,800 meters (19,000 feet) in an area nicknamed the “popcorn field” due to ice boulders on the route leading into the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.Dozens of guides were on the move when a huge block of ice broke off from a hanging glacier, before splitting into smaller chunks and barrelling down into the icefall, one of the most dangerous areas on the route to ascend Everest. The ice “tumbled for several thousand feet, resulting in debris that came further out into the icefall”, according to an account by the International Mountain Guides climbing company, which has a team stationed on the peak.Veteran climber Alan Arnette, who reached the summit of Everest in 2011, said mountaineers usually tried to go through the icefall “as quickly as possible.”The hanging glaciers “are by definition unstable, sooner or later they are going to break and fall, making the icefall very dangerous,” Arnette told AFP from his home in Colorado.“You first hear the sharp crack of ice and then you can try to shield behind another block of ice, but in this case, they really had nowhere to hide.”‘Everyone is heartbroken’More than 300 people, most of them local guides, have died on Everest since the first summit by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.The death toll underscores the huge risks taken on by local guides who ascend the icy slopes, often in pitch-dark and usually weighed down by tenting equipment, ropes and food supplies for their clients. The nature of their work means that sherpas will usually make many more trips up the mountain and expose themselves to far greater risk than foreign climbers who pay tens of thousands of dollars to scale the 8,848-meter peak. While helicopters buzzed overhead, plucking snow-blanketed bodies out of the mountain using cables suspended from the aircraft, climbers said they would pause all expeditions until rescue operations conclude, according to police official Kumar Timilsina.“People have lost friends they’ve worked hand in hand with. Everyone is heartbroken,” Timilsina told AFP from Everest base camp.As news of the accident sent shockwaves among mountaineers, most of the sherpas on the mountain gathered their belongings and left, with some saying they would not return at all this season.“My sherpa said he won’t be returning — he has a wife and a two-year-old son and the love of his family outweighed any financial reward,” Australian climber Gavin Turner told AFP.The 38-year-old, who had set out for his first Everest summit just days ago, said the accident had left “many climbers asking themselves if they should go ahead.”Pray for me’In Kathmandu, anxious families waited for the bodies of their loved ones to arrive ahead of funeral rites at the city’s Buddhist monasteries.Teenager Phinjum Sherpa said her 36-year-old father, Ang Kaji Sherpa, had been on five Everest expeditions.“He used to say that…after the 10th expedition, he will stop,” she told AFP, while waiting for his body to arrive at a monastery in the capital.“I spoke to him on Thursday evening. He said he was going up the next morning, but the weather was not very good…He said, ‘pray for me.’”“We are six siblings and our grandparents are old. I am worried about how we will take care of each other,” said the teenager.Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, a national body representing tourism promoters, said guides’ families would receive life insurance payments amounting to $10,000.“It’s very difficult for families when the main breadwinner dies, but the association will look after their children’s education,” he said. The previous worst accident on Everest occurred in 1996 when eight people were killed during a storm while attempting to summit the mountain. In the past, some accidents have been blamed on overcrowding or on ill-prepared foreign climbers taking unnecessary risks to reach the summit before returning home.Every summer, hundreds of climbers from around the world attempt to scale peaks in the Himalayas when weather conditions are ideal. The government has issued permits to 734 people, including 400 guides, to climb Everest this summer. The impoverished Himalayan country, home to eight of the world’s 14 peaks over 8,000 meters, counts tourism as a key revenue-earner.
