Rabat – Spain’s national police on Saturday detained a young Moroccan who interrupted a wedding ceremony in Valladolid, north Spain, while shouting “God is greatest”. The 22 year-old man approached the altar with the intention of taking down the cross and various other religious objects. Valladolid’s Government Subdelegation has reported that the man has since been accused of disturbing public order, making threats and “crimes against religious feeling”.The man seen in the video is a Moroccan residing in Spain with a student permit, and the video of the incident has been widely shared on social media. On June 3, a 47 year-old Moroccan man was arrested in Madrid following an international warrant for his arrest. He is suspected of belonging to a terrorist group, helping prepare terrorist activities, and finding funds to finance these activities.Born in Tetouan, and now a resident of Parla in Madrid, the man was investigated by police in 2004 following terrorist attacks in the city on March 11, 2004.Research conducted this year by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) shows that Moroccans make up the largest foreign community in Spain, numbering 747,872.
9 February 2007The people of Côte d’Ivoire now have “an historic chance” of ending the long stalemate in its peace process, the outgoing United Nations envoy to the divided country said today. Pierre Schori, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, told journalists that the current dialogue being organized by the African Union (AU) and mediated by Blaise Compaore, President of neighbouring Burkina Faso, offered the Ivorian Government and the rebel Forces Nouvelles an opportunity to resolve their differences. “Don’t blow it this time,” Mr. Schori said, pointing out that the peace process is Côte d’Ivoire is “still at square one” despite 22 resolutions and 20 presidential statements on the subject from the Security Council in the past four years. Mr. Schori, who is ending a two-year stint as Special Representative and head of the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), briefed the Security Council today on the latest efforts to find peace in a country that has been divided between the Government-controlled south and the rebel-held north since 2002. Commending Mr. Schori on his work, the Council later issued a presidential statement welcoming recent pledges by President Laurent Gbagbo and Forces Nouvelles Secretary-General Guillaume Soro to participate in the talks with Mr. Compaore, which it stressed must take place within the framework of earlier Council resolutions. Last month in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held a one-day summit to try to find ways to revive the peace process. National elections originally scheduled for last October had to be postponed for a year because of the tensions, which have been exacerbated by partisan media outlets. One of the key disputes has been over the identification of citizens, which will help determine voter lists. Today’s Council statement, read out Ambassador Peter Burian of Slovakia, which holds the rotating presidency this month, said that “neutral and impartial official media” as well as the disarmament of armed groups and a programme of citizen identification “are necessary to create the conditions for the organization of free, fair and credible elections” by 31 October this year. Mr. Schori said an estimated 3 to 4 million people who live or work in Côte d’Ivoire have been artificially excluded from access to some forms of political life because of a lack of identification papers. Reflecting on his term in Côte d’Ivoire, Mr. Schori said that while it had been rewarding, he had also felt frustrated by some elements of the UN and the mission itself, such as the presence of an “old-boys network,” a lack of awareness about gender issues and an excessive reliance on hierarchical structures. He found “some lack of sense of urgency and crisis awareness. This is a mission under Chapter VII [of the UN Charter], dealing with peace and security, life and death. Then you can also work on Saturday mornings, for instance. That was not appreciated by all,” he said. Mr. Schori added that it was “a difficult but a noble cause to be sent out to work for peace and development and democracy, and it’s not like in ordinary jobs.”

LONDON – Britain’s media secretary says that officials will seek a government-backed watchdog to oversee the country’s scandal-tainted press, saying that officials had rejected a last-ditch proposal by newspapers to regulate themselves.Maria Miller told lawmakers Tuesday that the newspaper industry’s proposals had been rejected, paving the way for the government’s favoured approach. The new regulatory body is meant to be independent of government control but will still have official blessing.Proponents say that the government backing is necessary to keep the body from being manipulated by Britain’s press, whose reputation took a beating following revelations of mass eavesdropping, corruption, and computer hacking.Opponents say the watchdog opens the way for politicians to censor the country’s traditionally rambunctious media. The mother of Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has told authorities that she does not wish to pursue criminal charges against her son, who last week was arrested for misdemeanor family assault for allegedly hitting her in the face with his cap.A Dallas County district attorney’s spokeswoman says the case DeSoto police filed against Bryant includes an affidavit of non-prosecution from the complainant. The affidavit means the complainant doesn’t want to proceed.Police in the southern Dallas suburb arrested Bryant last week after a July 14 incident in which he allegedly hit his mother, Angela Bryant, across the face with a ball cap. A police affidavit says Bryant grabbed his mother by her T-shirt, causing her bra to tear.Prosecutors haven’t said whether they will pursue the case. Bryant is accused of misdemeanor family violence.According to the incident report, Bryant became angry when his mother asked him to leave her home during an argument Saturday afternoon. Initially, DeSoto police captain Ron Smith said Bryant slapped his mother in the face. But the police report, which was released later, clarified that Bryant allegedly grabbed her by her T-shirt and hair and “hit her across the face with his ball cap.”Angela Bryant, whose T-shirt and bra were allegedly torn during the incident, indicated on the 911 call that this was not the first time she was assaulted by her son.“I can’t keep letting him do this,” said Angela Bryant, who made the call from the nearby home of family friend and adviser David Wells. “I can’t keep letting him do me like this. I’m tired. I’m going to put an end to it today. I’m going to put an end to it today. I’m tired.”Officers who responded to the 911 call from Bryant’s mother did not observe any injuries and she did not complain of pain at the time, according to the report. On Monday, after officers contacted Bryant’s mother at her home, the report states that she said she had pain in her wrists, hands and arms. Officers observed swelling around her wrists at that time, according to the report. After being transported to the DeSoto police department, Angela Bryant, 37, provided a written statement detailing the alleged assault. According to the report, she stated that Dez Bryant repeatedly struck her in the hands and wrists. Officers observed bruising on both arms. She also complained that her chest was sore from Bryant pushing her.Bryant was charged with a Class A misdemeanor for assaulting a female family member.“It’s pretty straightforward,” Smith said. “Him and his mom got in an argument. She had some injuries. We made an arrest.”

Police have charged three men with bribery, following The Telegraph’s investigation into allegations of greed and corruption at the heart of English football. The City of London Police’s Fraud Squad announced that Tommy Wright, 52, the former Barnsley Football Club assistant manager, has been charged with two counts of accepting a bribe. Two football agents, Giuseppe ‘Pino’ Pagliara, 62, and Dax Price, 47, have also been charged with two counts of paying and facilitating a bribe.Wright was sacked after allegedly accepting a £5,000 cash ‘bribe’ in a meeting with undercover reporters posing as representatives of a fictitious Far East company. All three men have previously denied any wrongdoing. The charges follow an investigation by The Telegraph which was published in September 2016. Detectives from the City of London Economic Crime Directorate launched an investigation in November 2016 after concluding their review of material gathered by this newspaper. The three men were interviewed between December 2016 and April 2017 and will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court in September.
Continuing from yesterday’s post on Bauma (April 19-25 in Munich), International Mining has even more lined up for its special April article on the event. This includes Tenova Takraf’s new generation of mobile crushing systems, ITT Water & Wastewater’s two-stage Flygt pump, SSAB’s free welding handbook, Grindex’s new Master SH pump, Pilot Crushtec’s Twister VSI crushers, Derrick Corp’s Stack SizerTM and Cummins’ V-18 configuration QSK78 engine.Takraf’s latest technical developments of mobile crushing plants have been manufactured with large scale open-pit mining projects in mind. They are of particular use in coal mines where seams can be extracted along straight and extended benches. The company recently supplied and commissioned a 12,000 t/h mobile crushing plant for a coal mine in northern Queensland, Australia. The unit has a slewable superstructure and discharge boom conveyor that can be positioned at different angles to the mining face, providing operational flexibility.ITT’s new two-stage 2600 series Flygt pump, the 2660 ST, is the seventh-biggest model of the series and can be used in a broad range of applications within mining. The pump is based on the design of the 2600 series and has a zero leakage ‘Active Seal’, which contributes to longer intervals between oil changes and longer maintenance intervals. The first edition of the SSAB welding handbook was so popular that several reprints were required to satisfy demand. A great deal has happened in the field of materials in the meantime, including the introduction of new steel types. So SSAB has taken the opportunity to revise and expand the manual. Daniel Stemne has compiled the new revised edition of the classic SSAB welding handbook, which will be available at the company’s booth during the show.Grindex’s new drainage pump has been designed to deliver water up to over 80 m in one single step, made possible due to the double stage impellers and design. The Master SH pump can be used in deep excavations where high head pumping is common. It comprises all the features known from other Grindex dewatering pumps, with tripled wear resistance compared to earlier pump generations.Over 50 of Pilot Crushtec’s tracked TwisterTrac VSI crushers and over 500 static Twister VSI crushers are in operation around the world. The crushers use two variations of crushing. The first involves vertical shaft impact crushing, with rock being fed into a table type rotor which then accelerates and discharges the rock at high speed, against steel anvils in the crushing chamber. The impact of the rock hitting the steel anvils induces fractures, causing the rocks to break apart. The second variation called vertical shaft autogenous (VSA) crushing sees the rock being fed into a multi-port rotor which accelerates and discharges the rock at high speed against a rock filled crushing chamber. The impact of the rock on rock fractures, breaks and shapes the rock.Derrick’s Stack Sizer is used for fine particle wet screening. It consists of up to five individual screen decks positioned one above the other and operating in parallel. The sizer can also be fitted with urethane screen surfaces. The QSK78 engine will lead the Cummins line up at Bauma. The V-18 configuration QSK78 was the first engine to bring a 2,610 kW power capability to mining haul trucks operating at high altitudes. It was also the first engine of its size to feature a full-authority electronic management system, enabling engine parameters to be customised to precisely match the duty cycle of the equipment. The company’s display will also feature the EliminatorTM self-filtration system (featured in IM’s upcoming Maintenance feature in March).

The agreement represents a major milestone in the development of the project and provides significant certainty as to the economic and fiscal basis under which it can be developed.Alderon Iron Ore, through The Kami Mine Limited Partnership, has entered into a definitive Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management Agreement (the EPCM Agreement) with WorleyParsons Canada Services who will be the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor for the development of the Kami iron ore project. The budget for the EPCM Agreement with WorleyParsons is estimated at $92.5 million, which is consistent with the cost estimate set out in Alderon’s feasibility study for the Kami project.Fresh high-grade gold and silver assays point to the possible discovery of a new zone of mineralisation at its Tembang gold-silver project in South Sumatra, Indonesia according to Sumatra Copper & Gold. The results are considered significant because any additional resources at this location would easily and economically accessed via the planned Belinau underground decline development, which is expected to start in December 2013.Donner Metals reports that production at the anticipated average rate of 3,000 t/d commenced on May 15 at the Bracemac-McLeod mine located near Matagami, Quebec. Donner’s partner and operator, Glencore Xstrata, is now processing copper and zinc ore from the new mine following the depletion of ore at their Perseverance mine. The Bracemac-McLeod mine is a 65% Glencore Xstrata, 35% Donner joint venture. As operator, Glencore Xstrata is responsible for the execution of all development, production, processing, milling, smelting and refining activities related to the Bracemac-McLeod mine, as well as the exploration programs conducted on the Matagami project.

In January, HTC announced during the Consumer Electronics Show its lineup of three 4G phones. The phones included the HTC EVO Shift 4G from Sprint, the HTC ThunderBolt from Verizon Wireless and the HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T. At the time of the announcement, we only knew that the HTC Inspire 4G would be available during the first quarter. Now we have definitive word from AT&T that the smartphone will arrive this month. The addition of the HTC Inspire 4G brings with it a lot of firsts to AT&T. The smartphone is the first 4G phone offered by the carrier, and the first one to run Android 2.2 and the AT&T Mobile Hotspot application. The phone’s 4.3″ super LCD capacitive display will also be the largest in AT&T’s smartphone lineup. Other specs for the smartphone include:Android 2.2 platform Enhanced browser with built-in Adobe Flash Player 1 GHz Snapdragon processor 4 GB internal memory 8GB of microSD card storage 8 MP camera with autofocus, dual LED flash, face detection, geotagging, HD video recordingConnectivity includes Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 3.5mm stereo audio jack, Micro USBTalk Time of 6 hours, Standby time of 15.5 daysNoise cancellation, Dolby Mobile and SRS WOW HD sound Next-generation HTC Sense platform with cloud services (allows for remote wiping and phone location)Mobile Hotspot support when used with a DataPro with Tethering planThe HTC Inspire 4G will be available at the AT&T website and company stores beginning February 13th. The smartphone will retail for $99.99 with a two-year agreement.Read more at AT&TBrian’s OpinionThe launch of the HTC Inspire 4G is another milestone in HTC’s plan to get ahead of the curve and offer some of the first 4G smartphones on the three largest wireless carriers in the U.S. The smartphone’s launch is also an indicator of AT&T’s desire to expand and diversify its smartphone portfolio to include more Android phones in addition to the Windows Phone 7 and iPhone models it already offers. That diversification is even more important this year now that the iPhone is no longer exclusive to AT&T and Verizon Wireless plans to offer it beginning February 10th.Speaking of the iPhone, it was curious to see that the iPhone is going to launch on the Verizon Wireless network without 4G. That gives manufacturers like HTC quite an advantage to lock in customers who are going to be more comfortable signing a two-year agreement with a smartphone that supports 4G. We’ll have to wait and see if Apple joins the 4G party when or if a new iPhone model is launched this year.As these 4G smartphones roll out over the course of the year we can expect Verizon Wireless and AT&T to go head-to-head to retain customers and increase subscriber rolls. There will no doubt be claims that one network is faster than the other, but at the end of the day subscribers need to do some research to learn even if the market they are in supports 4G yet. After all, a 4G smartphone means nothing if you don’t have the accompanying service.

The Hellenic Museum has received a Victorian Museum Award 2015 for its exhibition ‘Gods, Myths and Mortals’, excelling amongst 1,000 museums and collecting organisations. The ceremony, hosted by Tegan Higginbotham, was held on Thursday 6 August at the National Gallery of Victoria by Museums Australia. Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley MP also took to the stage for a special address.“The judges recognised the ambitious and complex undertaking of the Hellenic Museum in bringing this exhibition to Melbourne,” said John Tatoulis, CEO of the Hellenic Museum.“The efforts of our team to mount an exhibition of this calibre is testament to their passion in delivering things at a very high quality level,” he said to Neos Kosmos, stressing that Museums Australia was impressed by the quality of the loaned objects from Benaki, the curatorial ambition, and the ingenious transformation of the interior spaces to accommodate the new displays. In 2013, the Hellenic Museum secured a ten-year loan from the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece, which allows Melbourne to host more than 150 artefacts spanning 8,000 years of Greek history and culture.“It is worth mentioning this is the first time the Greek Ministry of Culture has allowed a collection of such historic and cultural significance to leave Greece for more than a year,” Tatoulis emphasised.“This collaboration between the two museums offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the developments of history, cultures and technologies of the past, moving from mythology to today’s representation.”The partnership came about as a result of the Hellenic Museum’s initiative to develop a long-term relationship with the Benaki, which, unlike any other museum in Greece, spans the entirety of Greek civilisation from pre-history through to the present day.“Greek language, history, art, mathematics and science have significantly influenced western civilisations through the ages,” Tatoulis added, noting that this information intersects with the national curriculum here in Australia on all levels, from primary through to tertiary. The ‘Gods, Myths and Mortals’ exhibition is divided chronologically into four periods, presented in a design inspired by the labyrinth from the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Its main body includes findings of Neolithic pottery, Cycladic statues, Minoan figurines, Mycenaean jewellery, Hellenistic sculptures, Byzantine icons and manuscripts.Post-Byzantine secular art and costumes and Neo-Hellenic art and weaponry, including ornate swords and pistols belonging to Greek revolutionary heroes Kolokotronis and Mavromichalis, are also amongst the exhibits.“With Melbourne being the home for so many people of Greek heritage, we expected a great and ongoing turn-out; however, the exhibition is appealing to the broader community,” Tatoulis said.“The numbers have steadily risen, whereas the mix is diverse and close to 70 per cent of those who visit the museum are of non-Greek background.”In addition to the vast collection of Greek antiquities, the partnership also includes future access to the Benaki’s collections of Coptic, Chinese, Indian and African works, as well as one of the world’s most significant Islamic art collections. * For more information head to www.mavic.asn.au or visit www.hellenic.org.au Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram

It’s weird. Ninebot Companies have started to look past automobiles in an effort to decongest major cities and look for new ways to get humans from point A to point B in a more efficient fashion. One industry that’s received quite a bit of attention is scooters. While it’s easy to recall days of manually powered scooters that may or may not have whacked the back of your ankle, Ninebot has a different idea.China-based Ninebot revealed its latest smart scooter at Innovation in AI-powered Mobility in Beijing this past Friday called the KickScooter T60 and it will actually drive itself to charging station. See? No more whacked ankles. Not only can the scooter pilot itself back to a charging station when it’s time to rejuice, but its cloud-based mechanics can drive it to a user on its own.For example, say a large social event just let out. The company can look at this data and dispatch a flock of KickScooter T60s to the area for people to jump on and ride off. I’m not sure I want to see what a group of these zipping around without a driver looks like, though. The idea is pretty unnerving. Ninebot didn’t explicitly say what kind of technology unlocks the autonomous abilities but it said the scooter uses “vision-based navigation technology.” Obviously, something needs to award the machine the ability to “see” the world around it, whether that’s lidar, radar or something else.Ninebot also took the wraps off two new delivery robots. DeliveryBot S2 is an upgraded version of the S1 that can see the world better via its lidar and also go up and down elevators without help. Meanwhile, DeliveryBot X1 can tackle city infrastructure and even recognize traffic lights and withstand rain. A meeting was held between all the IPL stakeholders in London where the expansion of the league from eight to ten teams was discussed. However, this proposed increase in the number of teams will not be a first as 10 sides took part in the 2011 edition of the league when Kochi and Pune had their respective franchises. However, there were contractual issues between Kochi and the BCCI which meant that the side could last for only one season. Also, the Sahara-owned Pune Warriors pulled out after the 2013 edition, which made the 2014 season an eight-team affair.”We discussed increasing the number of teams but it was an informal discussion. Anyway, the teams don’t have the authority to decide on the matter, the BCCI will have to take a call but we are open to the idea,” a team official, who attended the meeting in London, told PTI.’IPL expansion was discussed in the meeting’ File photo of KKR captain Dinesh Karthik.IANSAnother official confirmed that the IPL expansion was discussed in the meeting.”There was a discussion but it was done at an informal level. There is no concrete plan as of now on how to go about it. More teams will lead to more games which could mean a bigger scheduling window. So, all of that needs to be worked out,” said the official. It needs to be mentioned here that when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended from the league, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions were the replacements. However, as per an IANS report, there are officials in the BCCI who wish to have all bases covered first before spreading its wings as they do not want a repeat of the 2011 drama which left the BCCI redfaced. IANS”They are our stakeholders and the BCCI shares a very good relationship with the franchisees. We are concerned that such opaque behaviour and casual statements and remarks by someone in the senior professional management can unnecessarily mar the trust and relation between the BCCI and the franchisees,” the official said.Considering the fiasco which hit the league in 2011, it is quite understandable that the board officials want to be extra careful and take care of all the legal and other issues before branching out. “Some people seem to thrive in creating misunderstandings in order to compensate for their lack of competence. When the time comes, we will have a sincere dialogue with the franchisees on this,” the official further added.
Yasmine Arrington grew up like most of the other children in her neighborhood, but there was one part of her life that she kept mostly locked away, one that she says caused her lots of pain, embarrassment and financial struggles. For most of her life, her father was locked away in a Georgia prison while she lived in D.C. And later, after her mother died, she and her brothers ended up being raised by their grandmother.Arrington, 22, is a part of a growing demographic, children whose parents are behind bars. Approximately 2.7 million children in the United States have a parent who is incarcerated, according to experts..Local residents, City Councilmember LaRuby May (D-Ward 8), community organizations and others gathered recently in southeast Washington to discuss the phenomenon at a forum sponsored by the Strengthening Families and Communities Coalition. The event, titled “Improving the Lives of Children of Incarcerated Parents,” was held on Sept. 14 at the R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center. The panel was made up of Arrington, Harold Dean Trulear, an associate professor at Howard University School of Divinity; Cedrick Hendricks, acting deputy director of Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency; Christophe Beard, the management/program analyst at the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education; Alan Inman, president of Global Peace Foundation-USA, Stuart Anderson founder and director of Family & Friends of Incarcerated People; Carole Fennelly, founder of Hope House DC, a nonprofit dedicated to helping men in prison stay in touch with their children; the Rev. Dr. Kendrick E. Curry, pastor of Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, and K. Ivy Hylton, president and CEO of Youth and Families in Crisis.Hendricks explained how it can often be difficult for incarcerated parents to stay in touch with their children.“The fact that they’re as far away as California or West Virginia or Florida or Michigan makes it difficult for the families to stay in touch with their loved ones,” he said.“If you’re in Victorville in California, you’re not getting any visits,” Hendricks continued. “If you’re in Michigan, that’s a 10-hour drive. So, that has some impact on the ability of incarcerated persons to stay in touch with their children.”Hendricks explained how in a Hazelton penitentiary survey of 66 women, it was shown that usually when a parent is incarcerated, the child can end up in foster care, living independently or more often with relatives, usually the maternal grandmother. This is something to which Arrington, also a panelist, said she can attest.“I missed a lot of time growing up,” she said. “I missed having that father-daughter relationship. “When schools would have father daughter dances and girl scouts would have father daughter events I didn’t have my father there to participate.”“Fortunately, I still had a lot of other people — mentors and family and church family– that would speak positive to me: ‘You’re intelligent, beautiful. You’re going to make it and go far.’ So, I have a pretty good positive self-esteem,” Arrington continued.Arrington said her father is currently out of prison and has been able to obtain construction work through a federal agency. She said the two have been able to establish a positive relationship.Perry J. Moon, executive director of the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative, said the subject is important, particularly to residents of southeast D.C. “We see firsthand the impact that incarceration of parents causes young people: the trauma, the impact on their education and violence in the community,” he said.May told the audience that she introduced a bill to the District’s City Council in July that she said will help those children as well. The bill requires the mayor to identify children of incarcerated parents in the District and do a full assessment on them.“Once we find out what their profile is, then we look internally in the District and across the country for the best practices on how it is we serve the children that we identified,” May said.
