Congress party vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he was in favour of fighting the Assembly elections in Rajasthan under the “collective leadership” of senior party leaders, thus putting to rest rumours about change in Congress leadership in the State ahead of Assembly elections in 2018.In a meeting with party MLAs from the State in New Delhi, Mr. Gandhi led the discussion on strategies for Assembly polls as well as the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.Brain stormingTwenty-three of the 24 Congress Legislature Party members met Mr. Gandhi at the Congress’ “war room” on Gurdwara Rakabganj Road in Delhi on his invitation, while Deeg-Kumher MLA Vishvendra Singh skipped the meeting.Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Rameshwar Dudi, who was among those present, said that Mr. Gandhi was in favour of fighting the Assembly election under the “collective leadership” of senior leaders. “He [Mr. Gandhi] called upon the party leaders to make preparations for getting a historic mandate in the elections,” said Mr. Dudi. All India Congress Committee general sectary in charge of the State Avinash Pande, the four AICC secretaries assisting him, Pradesh Congress president Sachin Pilot and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot were among those who met Mr. Gandhi.Report on BJP govtWhile Mr. Gandhi sought suggestions from the MLAs for strengthening the party, Mr. Dudi presented a report on the burning issues and “complete failure” of the Bharatiya Janata Party government on various fronts. “In particular, I mentioned the welfare schemes of the [previous] Congress regime that were stopped by the BJP,” said Mr. Dudi.Favourable spot Mr. Dudi had recently suggested to Mr. Gandhi that all the Congress MLAs be called to Delhi for holding deliberations. He said an atmosphere was building up in Rajasthan in favour of Congress, which would dispel all notions about the BJP’s popularity in the 2018 election. The MLAs expressed their views about connecting farmers, Dalits, tribals and youths with Congress and laid emphasis on making the party’s frontal organisations more effective. Mr. Dudi and Mr. Pilot invited Mr. Gandhi to visit the State to attend some huge farmers’ rallies being planned in different regions.
The newly formed Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) is going to be a pampered lot, at least financially. DU is planning to increase the financial outlay of DUSU significantly this year. While each union every year received nearly Rs 4 lakh to spend on student welfare activities and their plan of action so far, it may go up as much as three times this year, supposedly for better and some ‘serious’ functioning of DUSU.”We still have to figure out the exact amount we have received from colleges for DUSU. But we have decided to increase it from this year so that they can conduct their job well and reach out to more colleges,” a senior DU official said.Ajay Chhikara, who was the DUSU president in the last academic session, added that his team was allocated Rs 3.67 lakh to carry out DUSU activities for one year. While he was the only member from NSUI, the other three office-bearers were from the rival party, ABVP.”We got the money to hold student-related welfare activities, cultural programmes and to carry out our day-to-day activities. But just Rs 3.67 lakh was not enough to cater to 51 colleges affiliated to DUSU,” Chhikara said. “However, things are set to change as DUSU will no longer be cash-strapped. Earlier, every student had to pay Rs 5 towards DUSU fund as part of the total fee. That amount went up to Rs 20 per student this year. After all calculations, we expect that the new union should get something around Rs 19 lakh,” he added.advertisementWhile DUSU leaders had been quite popular till a few years ago, they have remained relatively unproductive over last few times. DU officials say this is primarily because of lack of initiative on their part and also because DUSU lacked unity as its members came from different student parties. With NSUI holding three out of four posts, it remains to be seen if the office-bearers can use absorb the hike in their budget judiciously. For now, they seem a little clueless though. Arun Hooda, the current president of DUSU, said on Sunday that he had many sports and cultural programmes lined up. “We will soon decide our plan of action,” he said. The new DUSU panel was elected on September 14 and the winners assumed office three days later on September 17.

The Cuban men’s volleyball team will compete in the Rio Olympics despite the detention of six of its players in Finland over a suspected aggravated rape, an official at the National Sports Institute (INDER) said, according to website Cubadebate and other state-run news outlets on Wednesday. The island nation will be sending 120 athletes to the games in Rio de Janeiro to compete in 18 disciplines, said Jos Antonio Miranda, INDER director of high performance sports, the media outlets reported.”After not qualifying in volleyball for 16 years, we had 18 athletes in our preselection and we are going to be there with 12 in the Olympic games,” Miranda was quoted as saying.Police detained eight players earlier this month in the Finnish city of Tampere, where the Cuban team was playing in a World League tournament. The suspected rape occurred at the hotel where the team was staying. Two of the men were then released and are no longer suspects. The other six will remain in custody while the investigation continues.”Preliminary information suggests that (these players) are linked to acts completely unrelated to the discipline, sense of integrity and respect that govern our sport,” Cuba’s Volleyball Federation said in a statement.Cuba performed better than any other Latin American country at the 2012 Olympic games, earning sixteenth place in the medals table.

Senior GIS Manager and Trainer, Simone Lloyd, speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ on September 6, said it is important that agencies know that they have access to the software, which can be used to facilitate fulfilment of their mandate. The National Spatial Data Management Division (NSDMD) is urging ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to take advantage of the geospatial technologies and resources available through a four-year Enterprise-wide Licence Agreement (ELA) signed in 2015. Story Highlights The National Spatial Data Management Division (NSDMD) is urging ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to take advantage of the geospatial technologies and resources available through a four-year Enterprise-wide Licence Agreement (ELA) signed in 2015.The ELA, signed with global market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), which provides world-renowned mapping and spatial and analytics software, aims to ensure that all government agencies have access to geospatial data.Senior GIS Manager and Trainer, Simone Lloyd, speaking at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ on September 6, said it is important that agencies know that they have access to the software, which can be used to facilitate fulfilment of their mandate.“We recognise that some agencies were able to, based on their mandate and their resources, engage Esri and be able to get whatever current software is available to facilitate their mandate. However, other agencies were not able to, so we decided as a government, to approach and to bargain for the agreement to cover the entire government, so that all agencies can actively acquire software from Esri,” she explained. The Ministry of Finance and the Public Service manages the yearly payment for the licence.Ms. Lloyd said through the upcoming inaugural staging of the GIS User Conference, the NSDMD is hoping to promote the ELA and expand the use of the GIS software by MDAs.The User Conference will be hosted on October 10 and 11 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel.“The fact is, as we move towards Jamaica being more technologically enabled and, therefore, more sustainable, we need to ensure that more agencies come on board,” Ms. Lloyd said. She noted that the NSDMD will be hosting a special ‘Getting Started’ workshop during the User Conference, and is inviting agencies that have recently joined the ELA and those not yet using the software to send representatives. Training sessions for the workshop will focus on the benefits, the procedure of becoming a part of it and what it entails. She said there has been significant uptake of the GIS technology since the ELA was signed, particularly by MDAs in the security field, such as the Ministry of National Security, the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force.Meanwhile, the NSDMD is working with the agencies to find a solution to limitations with hardware, experienced by some agencies, to host the GIS software available under the ELA.Ms. Lloyd said the agreement has also led to the expansion of the GIS in Schools Programme (GISSEP) of the NSDMD, as it allows schools to acquire the GIS software at no cost on their mobile phones and in computer laboratories.“This allows students to be exposed to it and be able to utilise it in preparing for examinations and with the Geography school-based assessment and other aspects of their curriculum,” she said.
It’s a triple treat for stargazers. Get ready for a lunar eclipse, a supermoon and a blue moon in unison. Such an occurrence hasn’t happened in over a century, so mark your calendars for Jan. 31 to avoid missing out on this rare celestial event. What is a blue moon?To put it simply: a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. The first occurred earlier this month (Jan. 2). Despite the popularity behind its name – “once in a blue moon” – blue moons aren’t as rare as you might think. According to Space.com, they usually happen once every 2.7 years. What is a supermoon? This upcoming moon will also be a supermoon. What does that mean? A supermoon is a full moon that coincides with perigee – a fancy way of saving “near Earth.” When a full moon comes within around 362,146 kilometres of our dear planet, it reaches is closest approach and appears up to 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than usual. When this happens, the moon is elevated to supermoon status.READ: The 2017 solar eclipse entranced Canadians across the countryThe total lunar eclipse and “blood moon”Jan. 31 marks the first blue moon total lunar eclipse in North America for more than 100 years. For roughly 77 minutes, this supermoon will pass through the Earth’s shadow, casting a dazzling blood-orange hue over the moon. This is why lunar eclipses are sometimes referred to as “blood moons.” Although, in this case, you might call it a “blue blood moon.”Who will have the best view in Canada?Canadians residing further out in the West – in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories – will have the best chance to view the eclipse in its entirety, weather permitting. The eclipse will begin at 3:48 a.m. on the West Coast, with the total eclipse beginning at 4:51 a.m. and ending at 5:29 a.m. local time.Other potentially clear-viewing locations include parts of southern Alberta,Saskatchewan and the Yukon. In the east, the eclipse will begin at 5:51 a.m. local time on Jan. 31. Due to poor weather conditions, the remainder of Canada will only get to witness a partial lunar eclipse. However, viewing conditions might be better for stargazers residing from Quebec City to Ottawa. How do I watch the lunar eclipse?Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse doesn’t require any special viewing equipment. It’s perfectly safe to watch with your own eyes, but you’re free to use binoculars and telescopes to enhance your viewing experience.Watch the Super Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse on live streamIf you’re unable to see this stunning spectacle for yourself, then plugging in is a great alternative. GENEVA — China and the United States have traded barbs again at the World Trade Organization, with the U.S. ambassador accusing China of theft of technology and an envoy from Beijing retorting that the U.S. was “finger-pointing.”The standoff comes as many countries lined up to criticize and question Trump administration policies in a WTO trade policy review of the United States, a regular process that WTO member states undergo.Wednesday marked the second and final closed-door session on the U.S. after a first one on Monday.U.S. Ambassador Dennis Shea sought to re-direct attention on China, saying it would subsidize its industries to squeeze foreign producers and dump products at cheap prices abroad, a transcript of his remarks showed. The Associated Press
by Keith Leslie, The Canadian Press Posted May 5, 2014 6:58 am MDT TORONTO – Campaign buses for the June 12 Ontario election rolled for the first time from Queen’s Park Monday, heading directly to the vote-rich suburban area surrounding Toronto, known as “the 905” because of its original area code.A sign of where the real battle will be fought, all three party leaders visited the heavily-populated and fast-growing region, which was a mix of Liberal and NDP seats provincially but where many ridings are held federally by Conservatives.Premier Kathleen Wynne’s campaign bus crawled north through rush hour traffic on Highway 404 to her old high school in Richmond Hill, where she talked to students about the importance of leadership and how to make a valid argument without attacking your opponent.“At this very school, I learned that if you want to really have everyone come on side, in the end it’s about being positive and not tearing each other down,” said Wynne.Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak ventured west to a recording studio in nearby Mississauga, where he talked about his five-point plan to create one million jobs over 10 years.“What the province needs right now is a premier who is focused like a laser on job creation and a long-term plan to turn our province around, not short-term popularity,” said Hudak. “My message here: there is hope. There’s going to be opportunity. There’s going to be a million new jobs.”NDP Leader Andrea Horwath campaigned in Brampton, including some old-fashioned “mainstreeting,” where she attacked her opponents and said the New Democrats would protect the average voter.“The Liberal government has been plagued with scandal and with waste and basically put a budget together to try to cover up, frankly, their dismal record,” said Horwath. “The Conservative party spent a lot of time making noise and causing trouble but not really focusing on the results of Ontarians.”The Conservatives decided to make public Monday their statement of defence in the $2-million libel suit filed against Hudak, the PC Party and energy critic Lisa MacLeod over allegations they made against Wynne regarding the deletion of emails on two gas plants cancelled by the Liberals. The Tories deny they did anything wrong when they suggested Wynne “oversaw and possibly ordered the criminal destruction of documents” related to the $1.1-billion cancellation of gas plants in Misssissauga and Oakville prior to the 2011 election.“I’m not going to back down,” vowed Hudak. “When people see a billion dollars (added to) their hydro bills, blown to save Liberal seats, there’s another reason why we need change.”In the statement of defence, the Tories say they had a “legal, social and/or moral duty” to make the comments that the Liberals claim were defamatory.Wynne said she wasn’t worried about the impact of the libel suit on the election campaign.“When there are false allegations made, it’s very important that I stand up to those and that I make it clear that that’s unacceptable,” she said.“So the legal process will carry on, but we’re now into a period where it’s important to talk about how we’re going to make Ontario a better place.”Horwath said the Liberals had a plan to privatize the Toronto Transit Commission, an idea Wynne accused the NDP of fabricating.“That’s a made-up comment because I have never, ever talked about privatizing the TTC,” said Wynne. “It’s completely made up.”Wynne spent much of the weekend in a verbal sparring match with Prime Minister Stephen Harper on her call to create a mandatory provincial pension plan, which he called a tax that voters would not like, an issue she revived again on Monday. The maximum pay out under the Canada Pension Plan is about $12,500 a year, which an Ontario Retirement Pension Plan would double to $25,000, said Wynne.“Stephen Harper when he retires is going to have about 10 times that amount in his pension,” she said. “So the reality is that if he doesn’t believe that the Canada Pension Plan should be enhanced, then he should move out of the way and let Ontario do its work.”Wynne also talked to students about how she and her friends fought with administrators at Richmond Hill High School in 1971 so girls would have the right to wear pants to school.“Then I became the first Ontario premier to wear a skirt to work.”Even though the slow, staggered, not-yet-official start to the campaign slipped into second gear Monday, the legal writ is dated for Wednesday, May 7.Wynne called the election on Friday after Horwath said the NDP had lost confidence in the minority Liberal government and would vote against the budget, which the Tories had already vowed to try to defeat.— With files from Maria Babbage and Diana Mehta.Follow @CPnewsboy on Twitter AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Ontario party leaders start campaign in vote-rich Toronto-area suburbs Ontario party leader, from left, Liberal Kathleen Wynne, Conservative Tim Hudak and NDP Andrea Horwath, are shown in recent photos. European automotive trade body ACEA has voiced its support for the European Commission’s proposals to expand infrastructure for alternative fuels that were announced last week as part of its ‘clean fuel strategy’.In particular, ACEA welcomes the Commission’s clear acknowledgement that there is not a single solution to the challenges of sustainable transport and that there must be a cluster of options available. With the right framework conditions, alternative fuels have the potential to play a key role in improving air quality and reducing CO2 emissions. The automotive industry has put forward a number of solutions through its investments in cleaner technologies. It will only be possible for these solutions to happen if there is full cooperation between utility providers, infrastructure companies, the energy sector, standardisation bodies and the automotive industry – with the full support of national governments and the European institutions. This proposal takes a step in the right direction in fostering such synergies.Standardising the connection between the electricity grid and electrically-chargeable vehicles is one of the basics to help e-mobility gain a viable market share. The industry therefore welcomes the Commission’s proposal to unify the plug system for recharging electric vehicles in Europe.“The existence of a single common plug across the different member states will help kick start a stronger market uptake of electric vehicles, and gives clear direction for the future,” stated ACEA Secretary General, Ivan Hodac. “This represents a real break-thorough in current discussions on the harmonisation of charging.”Gas powered vehicles (both LNG and CNG) also have a strong role to play in lowering CO2 emissions. The industry is pleased to note that, as well as proposing a broader network of filling stations, the Commission has underlined the necessity of ensuring the appropriate quality of gas for use in future vehicles.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)
Most reporters flocked to players like sophomore foward Jared Sullinger and senior guard William Buford during the men’s basketball team’s media day Thursday, Oct. 13. But some players were left alone, with only the occasional reporter stepping forward to ask questions. The man behind the Jordan Sibert name tag was one of the loners until finally, one reporter came up. “Hey Jordan,” the reporter said. “You mind if I ask you a few questions?” The man smiled. “Um, I’m actually J.D.,” he said. The name tag was wrong and the man who was sitting behind it was actually sophomore forward J.D. Weatherspoon, not sophomore guard Jordan Sibert. Weatherspoon hasn’t been the most recognizable face on the OSU basketball team. He joined the team last year, but was declared academically ineligible for Winter Quarter and missed much of the season. It was an experience Weatherspoon said was difficult to deal with, but his teammates never abandoned him. “They showed me so much love and they were always there to support me so that really helped,” he said. Weatherspoon was reinstated for Spring Quarter and was able to travel to OSU’s 62-60 loss to Kentucky in the Sweet 16 of the Men’s NCAA tournament. He’s been a full-time member of the team ever since. “It feels good being back with the team,” Weatherspoon said. “Just a minor setback for a major comeback. That’s my mindset.” This year, Weatherspoon hopes his “major comeback” will find him a spot in OSU’s rotation. Although he lost almost a year of game experience, Weatherspoon is confident he can fit in with the chemistry of the team. He’s been playing with some of his teammates since grade school. “(Sullinger and I have) been playing with each other since we were in fifth grade,” Weatherspoon said. “And then me, (sophomore guard Aaron Craft) and Jordan Sibert played AAU together with Sully, so, I mean, the chemistry was still there.” Former OSU guard David Lighty, who is now playing professional basketball in Italy, has been talking to Weatherspoon on a regular basis about the role he can play for OSU this season. Weatherspoon tries to model his game after Lighty and said he thinks he can help replace Lighty on the defensive end of the floor. “I’ve been talking to (Lighty) a lot,” Weatherspoon said. “He’s been a big brother to me as soon as I came here. We are both athletic. We play the same position, built similar. So it really helped out a lot.” Coach Thad Matta has noticed a change in Weatherspoon. He said Weatherspoon has come a long way in the past year and could definitely play a role for the team. “I think J.D. has learned maturity,” Matta said. “He’s got a very good work ethic about him. His maturity level has improved. He’s a very, very good athlete and from that perspective, he’s understanding what his role is going to be on this team. “What he needs to do is defend and rebound for us.” Who knows, maybe if Weatherspoon fills his role, they’ll give him his own name tag for media day in 2012.

Valette believes there may be another message hidden in the painting. That year, Picasso began an affair with Francoise Gilot, a student 40 years his junior.”I wonder if in this picture he is representing his new love in a secret way. It is a very sensual picture in a body of work that is quite masculine and sombre.”The seller of the painting wishes to remain anonymous. Valette said: “After 40 years or so people need to organise their affairs. But it is definitely a picture which has been very much loved.”The March 1 sale includes a £35 million flower painting by Gustav Klimt, a Modigliani, a Gauguin and three other Picassos. A Cecil Beaton photograph from the time was taken in Picasso’s studio and shows him standing beside several masterpieces, including the tomato picture. It has had just two owners.Shown in New York once the war was over, it was bought in 1947 by Stephen Carlton Clark, heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune and founder of the Baseball Hall of Fame.A private collector purchased it in 1976 following Clark’s death and is now selling it at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sales in London on March 1 for £10-15 million. In the summer of 1944, Picasso was living with his lover, Marie-Therese, on the Boulevard Henri IV. Tomato plants were a common sight on windowsills and balconies in the city.Samuel Valette, senior specialist in Impressionist and Modern Art, said: “The light and colour in the picture represent the idea that there was light at the end of the tunnel. The Liberation of Paris was just around the corner.”Picasso could not exhibit any pictures during the war years because he was considered a degenerate artist by the Nazis. He was already at this time a superstar. He could have fled Paris but clearly for him it was an act of resistance to continue his life there.” Picasso’s painting of the tomato plant in bloom in the apartment he shared with his lover Marie-ThérèseCredit:Sotheby’s A Picasso painting of the tomato plant that grew on his windowsill during the Nazi occupation of Paris is to go under the hammer with an estimate of up to £15 million. The still life represents both the privations of war – Parisians were forced to grow their own produce because food was scarce – and, with its vibrant colour and ripe fruit, the resilience of the human spirit. The artist painted it in the summer of 1944, weeks before the city was liberated. Blacklisted by the Nazis, he was banned from exhibiting his wartime work in public.
NOT CONTENT WITH just working on experimental smartphones, Google has turned its attention towards developing tablets which can map its surroundings. The Wall Street Journal reports that Google’s new 7-inch tablet will be equipped with two back cameras, infrared depth sensors and advanced software that can capture 3D images of objects. The company is producing about 4,000 prototype tablets beginning next month. The tablets could be released ahead of its annual developer conference Google I/O, which will take place at the end of June.If this sounds somewhat familiar, that’s because it’s being developed as part of Project Tango, a section of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group working on experimental mobile devices.Back in February, it released a prototype smartphone which uses sensors to capture and map a user’s surroundings. It makes more than 250 million 3D measurements every second to build a 3D model of its surroundings. The smartphone could be used to help improve indoor navigation as well as gaming, allowing the visually-impaired make their way through unfamiliar indoor locations, and measuring objects and spaces.Like the Project Tango smartphone, Google will provide a number of developers with the new tablets to help develop new ways to use the technology. But it must be a deal that protects the Union. That remains our abiding principle. 2/2 pic.twitter.com/TVQopbbHnG— Nigel Dodds (@NigelDoddsDUP) March 22, 2019 The Government has consistently settled for inferior compromises when they didn’t need to and when there was, and is, more negotiating with the EU to be done.Taoiseach Leo Varadkar had said earlier that the extension gave the UK some “breathing space” and opened up the possibility of indicative votes in the House of Commons. In a statement ahead of the European Council summit, Theresa May had laid the blame for the current political impasse with MPs, for not voting her deal through. In response to this, Dodds said today:“Lectures by the Prime Minister putting the blame on others cannot disguise the responsibility her government bears for the current debacle and the fact that her agreement has been twice overwhelmingly rejected in Parliament. The Prime Minister has now agreed with the EU to kick the can down the road for another two weeks and humiliatingly revoke her oft-stated pledge that the UK would leave the EU on 29 March.“Nothing has changed as far as the Withdrawal Agreement is concerned,” Dodds added. With reporting by Christina Finn at the Fine Gael National Conference in Wexford The DUP is not happy with Theresa May’s ‘humiliating’ Brexit delay It had been thought that the DUP were softening their stance towards the draft Brexit deal – until this statement today. He said they have tried to give “reassurances and clarifications” around the backstop, adding that this weekend, the British parliament, should be given the time and space it needs to get a majority over the line for another vote next week. Last weekend, the DUP held talks with Theresa May and her Cabinet, including Treasury Secretary Philip Hammond, to discuss what changes they wanted to make to in order that they would vote for it. Updated Mar 22nd 2019, 7:14 PM DUP DEPUTY LEADER Nigel Dodds has criticised the UK government, and called the delay to the date by which the UK leaves the European Union “a humiliation”.Last night, it was agreed that the date the UK would leave the EU would be delayed until the 22 May if British Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal was passed; if the deal is rejected, the date would be delayed by two weeks until 12 April. The DUP, whose 10 MPs are supporting May’s government, said today that she had missed an opportunity to put forward new proposals to change the Withdrawal Agreement. In a statement released this afternoon, Dodds said that the fact that Theresa May didn’t do so “is all the more disappointing and inexcusable given the clear divisions and arguments which became evident amongst EU member states”.He said that these divisions were made evident “when faced with outcomes they don’t like” – possibly referring to the rejection of the Withdrawal Agreement by the House of Commons. There had been rumours that the DUP had been softening its stance towards May’s twice-rejected Withdrawal Agreement and could be preparing to vote for it next week for the third Meaningful Vote. “Fast and Furious” star Paul Walker’s father has filed a lawsuit against car company Porsche, alleging wrongful death of his son.In the court documents obtained, the actor’s father, who is the executor of Walker’s estate, alleges the Porsche Carrera GT lacked certain safety features that could have saved the lives of Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas, who was driving at the time of the accident, reported People magazine. Similar to the wrongful death lawsuit the actor’s daughter Meadow brought against the car company, Walker’s father states that the missing features include a stability control system, side-door reinforcements and a breakaway fuel line that could have stopped the car from catching on fire after it hit three trees.
