College journalists are also facing disruptions in the media industry, just like those working at professional news outlets, and questions about whether they will graduate to jobs in the business. Some are experimenting with new ways of delivering information.Arielle Gordon, 21, a senior at Colorado College, helped start a newsletter to report about the pandemic on campus and in the surrounding community of Colorado Springs. After a spike of cases in late August, the school’s test positivity rate has stayed below 1 percent, according to its coronavirus dashboard.“Our audience is definitely expanding as coronavirus cases pop up,” Ms. Gordon said, adding, “People in the broader community have more questions and have started paying more attention to the stuff that we’re reporting.”- Advertisement – Along with her co-writers, Ms. Gordon has published interviews with campus administrators, offered scientific forecasts about the state of public health and infection in the community, and documented the exhaustion of life in quarantine dorms.“People want to know what went wrong,” she said. “We’ve been trying to find out as much we can.” “You’re not parachuting in,” said Oyin Adedoyin, 21, the editor in chief of The Spokesman, the student newspaper at Morgan State University, Maryland’s largest historically Black university. “You literally live it,” she added. The Spokesman has partnered with the Poynter Institute to report on health disparities in Baltimore’s Black community. “Black people, specifically, have been affected by the coronavirus,” Ms. Adedoyin said, “whether it’s unemployment, whether it’s students who just really don’t learn as well online, whether it’s family situations where you just can’t be home.”- Advertisement –

Brown continued, “Somebody [who] can buy my drinks, my food, my coffee. I like coffee dates. I’m more into that. I think, like, a surfing date would be fun. Skateboarding? I don’t know. I just want it to be very relaxed.”The Alabama native revealed that she had three dates lined up with guys she met through a dating app. For her first outing, she played paddle tennis with a guy that she ultimately “ditched.” She then enjoyed a casual skateboarding date with an “attractive” and “really smart” guy, but she didn’t feel a “spark.” On her final date, she grabbed a bite with a “really sweet” man. Though she noted that it was “going good,” she recognized that he was “not my guy” and that there was “no connection.”Brown never specified what dating app she was using, but she said she has “matched with some really cute guys” through the service. She additionally acknowledged that “dating hasn’t always worked out” for her in the past, but she believes that “this will be good” for her.- Advertisement – Brown and Cameron briefly quarantined together alongside pals in March, but they have both denied reconciliation rumors. “We need to learn how to be friends. Nov 21, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – Preliminary tests indicate H5N1 avian influenza caused the death of a 35-year-old Indonesian man in Jakarta on Nov 19, according to a government official quoted today in the Jakarta Post. However, Indonesia is awaiting confirmation from a World Health Organization (WHO) reference laboratory of what would be the country’s eighth fatality from avian flu. WHO has already confirmed 11 cases, seven of them fatal, in Indonesia.Elsewhere in Southeast Asia and Europe, governments continued to push for changes in reporting and response to avian flu as the virus spreads among poultry.China pushes pace of reportingLocal governments in China have been ordered to report avian flu outbreaks, as well as outbreaks of other zoonotic diseases, to national authorities within 4 hours, according to a Bloomberg News report.Officials who fail to comply can be fined US $247 and be demoted or fired, according to the story, which cites an announcement yesterday by Xinhua, China’s official news agency.Even as the announcement was made public, China logged two new outbreaks of the virus, Bloomberg reported today. Morin Dawa County in Inner Mongolia had 176 bird deaths on Nov 15, according to a separate Bloomberg report. About 3,500 geese died the next day in Shishou City in the central province of Hubei. The H5N1 infection was confirmed by China’s National Avian Flu Reference Laboratory. Those outbreaks bring the total number of outbreaks in China this year to 21, Vice Agriculture Minister Yin Chengjie told Bloomberg News. The outbreaks have killed 144,624 poultry and prompted the culling of 21.2 million to contain the disease. The Associated Press reported today that Yin said there was an “increasing virulence of avian influenza,” as demonstrated by an increase in H5N1 illness in ducks and geese.Hong Kong promotes hygieneHong Kong enlisted public help yesterday for a widespread hygiene education effort aimed at preventing avian and pandemic flu.The 3-month effort began with yesterday’s “Community Cleanliness Day,” according to a news release from the Hong Kong government. The effort will include more than 230 community cleansing and hygiene programs with health seminars, roaming exhibits, bus parades, and home cleaning for the elderly. More than 80,000 people are expected to participate.Vietnamese official warns local authoritiesAvian flu could become a national disaster in Vietnam, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai warned yesterday in an Agence France-Presse (AFP) story.”The risk of a human pandemic would be very high if avian influenza is not checked in a timely manner in the country,” he said. “The epidemic [among poultry] is continuing to break out and become more and more serious.” He threatened to discipline officials who manage the problem poorly.”There has been a tardiness and an inefficiency in the fight against bird flu in several localities,” he added.Despite the vaccination of about 220 million poultry in Vietnam since September, the death toll continues to rise, AFP reported. About 1 million poultry have died or been culled because of H5N1 since October.Thai fighting birds to re-enter ring in 2006Thailand, which had banned cockfighting to help prevent avian flu, is preparing to permit the popular sport again in 2006. But this time measures will be taken to prevent the spread of H5N1 virus among birds or to people, authorities said in an online report Nov 19 from the Thai news agency MCOT.Officials will meet with breeders to agree on guidelines to allow the fights to occur. The birds must be registered and pass a health check before competing, said Khun Ying Sudarat Keyuraphan, the agriculture and cooperatives minister, on Nov 19. She said only about 40,000 of Thailand’s 1 million fighting cocks had been registered so far.An 18-year-old Thai man contracted a fatal H5N1 infection and died in September 2004 after using his mouth to clear mucous from the beak of one of his fighting birds.Romania confirms outbreak of H5N1A British laboratory has confirmed that Romanian hens found dead last week in Caraorman in the Danube River delta were infected with H5N1, Reuters reported today. The dead birds were found Nov 14, leading to the culling of about 2,000 birds and a quarantine of the village.Avian flu was also found in wild birds not far from the village, Reuters reported. Those samples will also be tested in London.Follow-up tests in Maliuc, where H5N1 was detected in October, were negative, the Romanian agriculture ministry reported, according to Reuters. Restrictions on the village have been lifted.Japanese outbreak H5N2, not H5N1Japan has confirmed that an avian flu outbreak on a farm in Ibaraki prefecture is not H5N1, but rather a low-pathogenic version of H5N2, according to a report filed with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Laboratory tests have confirmed that the outbreak, which began Nov 4, was H5N2. Those findings are consistent with speculation in published reports at the beginning of the outbreak; Ibaraki prefecture has seen H5N2 outbreaks since last June.
Sep 14, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today recognized two cases of H5N1 avian influenza in Indonesia, including one from March that was first reported yesterday by a WHO official and one from May involving a man who may have become infected after exposure to an ill family member. In both instances, the WHO has retroactively confirmed the cases on the basis of its new criteria for laboratory confirmation. The boy’s case put Indonesia’s count at 64 cases with 49 deaths, and the man, who recovered, represents the country’s 65th officially confirmed case. The 5-year-old boy from East Bekasi in West Java province became ill on Mar 4, was hospitalized 2 days later, and died on Mar 19. The WHO said test results using two different assays revealed high antibody titer for H5N1 on serum samples taken on days 11 and 15 of his illness. Field investigators had determined that the boy had been exposed to sick poultry near his home, where some birds had tested positive for the H5 virus subtype.Investigators identified the second case, in a 27-year-old man from Solok in West Sumatra province, when they traced contacts of the man’s 15-year-old sister who had a confirmed H5N1 infection in May. Her brother spent 6 days caring for her during her hospitalization. On May 28 he experienced mild cough and abdominal discomfort but no fever. His symptoms improved and he recovered in a few days.Despite his mild and atypical symptoms, the brother was tested as part of the health ministry’s contract tracing and management program. He was given a 5-day course of oseltamivir beginning Jun 1 and was placed in voluntary isolation during his recovery.Initial samples were negative for H5N1 infection; however, in August, follow-up testing of paired-serum samples found a fourfold rise in neutralization antibody titer for H5N1, a result that meets WHO’s new criteria for laboratory confirmation. The man reported no contact with diseased or dead poultry before he became ill. Investigators determined that human-to-human transmission resulting from exposure to his sister could not be ruled out.The WHO issued a report confirming his sister’s H5N1 infection on May 29. It said she remained hospitalized, but no details were available on the outcome of her illness. In other developments in Indonesia, the director of the country’s main treatment center for avian flu told participants attending a scientific conference in Jakarta yesterday that avian flu will continue to circulate among the country’s poultry flocks because of shortfalls in vaccination and biosecurity measures, according to an article today in The Jakarta Post.Santoso Soeroso, director of Sulianti Saroso Hospital, said improper vaccination of ducks and chickens may be contributing to the spread of the H5N1 virus. He said authorities are using substandard vaccines and are unable to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs because they lack an unvaccinated control group.Soeroso said recent research in Bali province revealed a vaccine failure rate of 39% and that 60% of the area’s ducks had avian flu.Indonesian agriculture minister Bagoes Poermadjaja told the group that only 60% of the country’s 300 million chickens and ducks had been vaccinated. He said the country lacked resources of early detection and is not adequately compensating citizens for slaughtered birds. He said biosecurity measures are also deficient, and he noted that most cases of avian flu in humans had occurred in provinces where transport of poultry is constant. Poermadjaja also said weak coordination between central government and regional administration hinders the coordination of avian flu prevention and management.See also:Sep 14 WHO statementhttp://www.who.int/csr/don/2006_09_14/en/index.htmlMay 29 WHO statementhttp://www.who.int/csr/don/2006_05_29/en/index.html
Jan 24, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – Outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in 15 countries since December 2007 are a potent reminder that the virus is still a global threat, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned today, as officials in Thailand announced they found the disease in poultry again after a 6-month lapse. The FAO statement said the heightened outbreak activity calls for close monitoring and strong control efforts. Recently affected countries include Bangladesh, Benin, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Myanmar, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine, Turkey, and Vietnam. Most outbreaks have occurred in poultry, including chickens, turkeys, geese, and ducks. However, a few of the outbreaks—those in China, Poland, and the United Kingdom—involved wild birds.Worrisome spots include Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Egypt, where the virus has become deeply entrenched despite major efforts to control the spread of the virus, said Joseph Domenech, the FAO’s chief veterinary officer, in the FAO statement.”The virus has not become more contagious to humans but has managed to persist in parts of Asia, Africa, and probably Europe. It could still trigger an influenza pandemic,” he said.Despite all of the developments that raise concerns, Domenech said his group has seen some positive trends.”Globally, much progress has been achieved in keeping the H5N1 virus under control. We are better prepared to deal with the disease than we were 3 years ago,” he said in the FAO statement. “Surveillance, early, detection, and immediate response have improved, and many newly infected countries have managed to eliminate the virus from poultry.”H5N1 returns to ThailandThe outbreak in Thailand is not included in the FAO’s total, but Thai livestock officials today announced that the H5N1 virus was detected in Nakhon Sawan province in the northern part of the country, about 188 miles north of Bangkok, according to a Bloomberg News report. However, a report that Thai officials filed yesterday with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said the H5 virus has been confirmed and that final test results are pending.According to the OIE report, the virus struck 4,085 broiler chickens at a commercial farm that is housed above a fish pond. The outbreak began on Jan 18, and the birds were tested as part of the country’s routine surveillance program. The remaining 55,585 birds were destroyed, the report said. Thailand’s last H5N1 outbreak occurred in June 2007, according to the OIE report.Country-specific outbreak observationsDomenech discussed aspects of outbreaks in several countries. He said India is struggling to control its worst-ever H5N1 outbreak. Yesterday the Associated Press reported that the virus has now spread to nine of West Bengal state’s 19 districts and that the outbreak’s reach is within 18 miles of Calcutta, India’s third-largest urban area.Indonesia is one of the hardest hit countries in terms of avian outbreaks and human cases. The FAO said the virus has struck 31 of 33 provinces since 2004. Domenech said new H5N1 virus strains have emerged in Indonesia, which means current poultry vaccines may not fully protect against the disease. He said the Indonesian government and the FAO, along with FAO and OIE reference laboratories, are instituting a virus-monitoring program to further examine the problem.Avian influenza outbreaks seem to be worsening in Bangladesh, where surveillance and control programs have not prevented the virus from spreading to 21 of 64 districts, the FAO statement said. The FAO said it is strengthening its presence in Bangladesh to support government efforts to control the disease.Egypt had some early success with vaccination campaigns on commercial poultry farms, but its control efforts may have slacked off, because the disease has now reappeared in industrial poultry farms and has spread more widely throughout the country, the FAO reported.Outbreak reporting, disinfection, culling, movement control, and biosecurity all need to be improved in Egypt, Domenech said, adding that the FAO is working closely with the government to strengthen disease detection, control, and communication. He also said potential changes in the H5N1 virus strains warrant further investigation.West African countries Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo all reported H5N1 outbreaks in 2007, the FAO report said. Domenech said that though the Nigerian government launched intense efforts to control the disease in poultry, virus circulation in the country still threatens neighboring countries. He said the FAO will continue working with the Nigerian government to boost disease control measures. In Europe, where Germany, Poland, Russia, and the United Kingdom recently reported outbreaks, disease detection and immediate response were very effective, particularly in the European Union countries, Domenech said.”But we are seeing virus infections in poultry that are not transmitted by wild birds. This raises questions about other ways of virus transmission and potential reservoirs of infection, like in free-ranging ducks,” he added.See also:Jan 24 FAO statementOIE reports on Thai outbreak
From all this, it can be concluded that tourism in the Western Balkans has a good perspective. Travel “from the country” reached the number of 1,4 billion passengers last year, which is an increase of 5,5% compared to 2017. From European countries the increase in travel was 5%, as well as from North America while outgoing travel from Asian countries grew by 7% and from Latin America by 6%. Tourism accounts for 10% of world GDP. THE COUNTRIES OF THE WESTERN BALKANS ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE INTERESTING DESTINATIONS THE KINDNESS OF PEOPLE HAS NO COMPANY Tourism is not an industry but a platform for the placement of domestic products and services that would not be competitive on the open international market. In such a model of tourism development there is profit, earnings, progress, but it cannot be the first, only and most important motive for inclusion in tourist flows. PURPOSE OF TRAVEL If we ignore these facts, it can happen that tourist traffic grows and the community weakens, remains without income and without population, only to be unattractive in the end and replaced by another, new, tourist destination. That is why today we are talking more and more about managing a tourist destination. All the advanced countries have left the old model of tourist organizations that dealt exclusively with promotion. Tourist organizations in the most developed tourist countries function as development agencies. They are managed by representatives of several neighboring municipalities and cities. When traveling for vacation, the first motive is “sun and sea” (29%), followed by short-term visits to cities (29%), then tour trips (18%), trips to the countryside and mountains (8%), cruises by boat (3%) ). The largest increase in reasons for vacation is recorded by short-term visits to cities, as much as 222% !. Cruises by boat are on the rise 78%, sun and sea 76%, tours 27%, rural and mountain trips 23%. TOURIST TRAFFIC IS GROWING AND THE COMMUNITY IS WEAK? In the MICE travel segment they are up 42%. 46% refers to conferences and seminars, 16% to congresses and conventions, 20% to business fairs and to incentive, incentive trips 18%. NIGHTS 72% of trips are aimed at vacations, 14% are business trips, 14% are visiting relatives and friends. Travel to other countries for vacations increased by 60%, for visits to relatives and friends by 59%, while business trips in terms of business deals decreased by 4%. South America recorded an increase of 87%, Asia and the Pacific 84%, North America 48%, Europe 45%, the Caribbean and Cent. America 32% of arrivals. Tourism is important for the EU because of its economic and employment potential and because of its great impact on society and the environment. During 2015, as many as one in ten companies in the European non-financial business economy belonged to the tourism sector. Approximately 2,4 million people were employed in these 12,7 million enterprises. Companies in industries with tourism-related activities employed 9,2% of all employees in the entire non-financial business economy, and 21,5% of persons were employed in the services sector. All these data are of great importance to us so that we can follow the world trends in tourism and according to the golden saying – “think globally and act locally.” Thus, one of the key factors on which the good performance of tourism development depends, has become a resident of a tourist destination. The biggest challenge is the way we will educate people well, direct them to tourist, entrepreneurial waters, teach them to live with tourism, but to preserve the original values of their culture. How to persuade young people to stay, work and thrive in tourism in their environment with a quality family life? How to ensure a good standard of tourism staff and how to encourage the development of responsible and sustainable tourism that benefits the local community? Croatia, as the last associate member of the EU, has become a starting point for exploring the surrounding countries in a package of weekly and multi-week trips. Such trips were also encouraged by the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, launched 19 years ago, which brings together Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Greece. On the platform of this initiative, cooperation projects financed from EU funds are created, and many of them rely on tourism through measures of rural development and cooperation in culture. The average number of overnight stays worldwide is 8. In North America it is 8,3, in South America 8,2, in Europe 8,2, and in Asia 7 overnight stays. The average number of overnight stays has been growing since 2015 when it was at 7,4. Hotels are mostly used for accommodation (60%), 15% of passengers stay with friends, and 25% of passengers use other types of commercial accommodation. Overnight stays in hotels increased by 59% in one year, but only in hotels of the highest and lowest category. 5% more passengers stay with friends and 72% more passengers choose all other types of commercial accommodation than a year earlier. So-called “homesharing” accommodation occupies only 6% of the market share. WE MUST NOT MAKE MISTAKES IN DEVELOPMENT What tourists expect when traveling to our region is authenticity. This feeling of “mild exoticism” “at the door of Western Europe” is a real challenge for travelers – explorers. Sometimes we make the mistake of “Europeanising” or “industrializing” our offer too much. Thus we lose the strongest trump cards of attraction. We must be as good as we are – in terms of authentic gastronomy, authentic architecture, authentic customs, costumes, products… Being authentic does not mean being backward, just as the introduction of Western European standards does not mean that we will be immediately valued as similar tourist destinations in Western Europe. Of course, the comfort of the accommodation, the cleanliness of the space, the kindness and dedication of the staff are not in question. These are “points” that need to be constantly improved. THE IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION The kindness of the people in this area is as fascinating as the history. The warmth of the welcome with occasional travelers, visitors, tourists is incomparable with the cold-friendly, professional hospitality in Western Europe. Our people are our greatest strength and competitive advantage in the tourism market. The attitude of people, the host towards the traveler, the traveler remembers the most and the longest. This is an important fact that is hard to point out these days when people are leaving us for better business opportunities. However, although caterers and hoteliers manage to “import” workers from third countries, those who manage to keep domestic workers, at least in key positions, will be at an advantage. The reason is very simple. Travelers are curious, inquiring about many things related to the place, the region they are visiting. Good feedback strengthens the feeling of passenger satisfaction. Let us remember that travelers today have the role of journalists, editors, publishers of news that is spreading like wildfire through the expanses of social networks. LOCAL POPULATION “THE KEY TO SUCCESS” IN TOURISM The so-called “gold markets” with average travel costs of more than 2.000 euros were Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Brazil and China. “Silver markets” with consumption per trip between 1.500 and 2.000 euros were the USA, India, Qatar, Japan and the Emirates. Europe still wants to remain the most visited tourist destination. Travel within Europe is growing as are arrivals in Europe. In addition to the large influx of tourists in the “tourist mecca”, the symbols of Europe such as Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Barcelona su are increasingly popular tours that include several countries. In recent years, touring has flourished in Croatia. Americans, Koreans, Chinese, Australians but also Swiss, Germans… want to get to know the most interesting natural and cultural sights of the countries they pass through. In this way, a very intensive and effective promotion of countries and destinations takes place. Each traveler creates and publishes personalized content from their trip and shares it via social media with hundreds of their friends who in turn share the most interesting posts with their friends and so on. Tourism organizations aim to implement models of development plans that have been adopted by the representative body of local self-government and agreed with neighboring municipalities and cities. Only after the acceptance of the new “tourist story” by the market, the private sector is involved in the sales process. But that’s a topic for one new article. What should guide us through progress is the desire to learn from the best in every segment of social and private entrepreneurship. Tourism is a key driver of the world economy These are data collected and processed by the IPK Institute, and presented at this year’s ITB Congress in Berlin. IPK conducts research continuously throughout the year for the following year. The survey is conducted using questionnaires in 60 countries around the world, on a sample of 500 respondents, in 000 languages. In Europe, the surveys are conducted in 55 countries with 33% market coverage, in the Americas in 99 countries with 13% market coverage, in Asia and the Middle East in 90 countries with 17% market coverage. Aircraft are the most used for travel (65%), while land and water transport participate with 35%. The growth of traffic was recorded by aircraft (+ 74%), ships (+ 72%), rented cars (+ 70%), railways (+ 4%), while bus transport recorded a minus of 7%. Last year, the first place in terms of the increase in arrivals was Turkey, which recorded a new 8,5 million arrivals, followed by the United States with an increase of 5,3 million, then Egypt 3,4 million, France 3,2 million, Greece 2,9 million , Italy 2,9 million, Thailand 2,8 million, Japan 2,6 million, Vietnam 2,6 million and Germany 2,6 million arrivals. Experience the city of PejačevićPhoto: Virovitica Tourist Board Tourist maps of the city of Virovitica with marked sights, service information, catering and accommodation facilities were also printed and distributed. Considering the numerous new contents in the city of Virovitica, the plan is to make a new study of brown signalization and to install all the missing signs, as well as to replace the old and worn-out signs. As part of this project, preference will be given to renters, ie adequate marking of all accommodation facilities in the city of Virovitica. Amendments to the Program of Work and Rebalance of the Financial Plan of the Tourist Board of the City of Virovitica, adopted at the first session of the Assembly the plan covers several segments. Guest safety Source: Virovitica Tourist Board Free tickets for Pejačević Castle and Virovitica City Museum The first one is certainty, which refers to the safety of tourists, which is especially important for choosing a visit to a destination. The year marked by the corona crisis is precisely this segment that is most important. Virovitica Tourist Board financed the purchase of cotton masks with the sign of the Pejačević Castle and the inscription “Greetings from Virovitica”. The masks are intended for employees of accommodation facilities, but also for guests who, in addition to protection during their stay, also serve as a souvenir that they can take and thus further promote Virovitica. In addition, disinfectants and medical masks were distributed to all Virovitica landlords.
COVID-19 has left a mark on the number of arrivals and overnight stays. Therefore, the Tourist Board of the City of Virovitica has prepared a promotion by which visitors for each night spent in a registered commercial accommodation facility in the city of Virovitica in the period from September 15 to October 15, 2020 as a gift get a free ticket for Pejačević Castle and Virovitica City Museum. For this action, the Tourist Board is also financing a promotional campaign called “Experience the city of Pejačević” on social networks, portals and in the press. The coronavirus pandemic has caused numerous cancellations in Croatia and around the world. This resulted in reduced number of visits, ie arrivals and overnight stays of tourists in a large number of destinations, especially continental ones. One such destination is also Virovitica, whose tourist board has decided to redirect the funds provided for the events that have been canceled by the decisions of the Headquarters so far, to the implementation of the support plan for Virovitica landlords. Visibility This year has shown the importance of visibility, especially on the Internet, and it has also shown how a large number of renters have neglected this particular segment of business. Namely, some accommodation facilities do not have their own websites nor are they present on internet platforms. In order to help Virovitica landlords and increase their visibility to potential guests, the Tourist Board of Virovitica will finance website design all accommodation facilities in the City area. Listed the website will also be available in English. In addition to the website, it will also be activated Facebook and Instagram profiles of each individual accommodation facility. The Tourist Board of the City of Virovitica will finance the purchase of photographs and the lease of copyrights, and provide the texts needed for the content of the new website.
