Sep 14, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today recognized two cases of H5N1 avian influenza in Indonesia, including one from March that was first reported yesterday by a WHO official and one from May involving a man who may have become infected after exposure to an ill family member.In both instances, the WHO has retroactively confirmed the cases on the basis of its new criteria for laboratory confirmation. The boy’s case put Indonesia’s count at 64 cases with 49 deaths, and the man, who recovered, represents the country’s 65th officially confirmed case.The 5-year-old boy from East Bekasi in West Java province became ill on Mar 4, was hospitalized 2 days later, and died on Mar 19. The WHO said test results using two different assays revealed high antibody titer for H5N1 on serum samples taken on days 11 and 15 of his illness. Field investigators had determined that the boy had been exposed to sick poultry near his home, where some birds had tested positive for the H5 virus subtype.Investigators identified the second case, in a 27-year-old man from Solok in West Sumatra province, when they traced contacts of the man’s 15-year-old sister who had a confirmed H5N1 infection in May. Her brother spent 6 days caring for her during her hospitalization. On May 28 he experienced mild cough and abdominal discomfort but no fever. His symptoms improved and he recovered in a few days.Despite his mild and atypical symptoms, the brother was tested as part of the health ministry’s contract tracing and management program. He was given a 5-day course of oseltamivir beginning Jun 1 and was placed in voluntary isolation during his recovery.Initial samples were negative for H5N1 infection; however, in August, follow-up testing of paired-serum samples found a fourfold rise in neutralization antibody titer for H5N1, a result that meets WHO’s new criteria for laboratory confirmation.The man reported no contact with diseased or dead poultry before he became ill. Jan 24, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – Outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in 15 countries since December 2007 are a potent reminder that the virus is still a global threat, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned today, as officials in Thailand announced they found the disease in poultry again after a 6-month lapse.The FAO statement said the heightened outbreak activity calls for close monitoring and strong control efforts. Recently affected countries include Bangladesh, Benin, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Myanmar, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine, Turkey, and Vietnam. Most outbreaks have occurred in poultry, including chickens, turkeys, geese, and ducks. However, a few of the outbreaks—those in China, Poland, and the United Kingdom—involved wild birds.Worrisome spots include Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Egypt, where the virus has become deeply entrenched despite major efforts to control the spread of the virus, said Joseph Domenech, the FAO’s chief veterinary officer, in the FAO statement.”The virus has not become more contagious to humans but has managed to persist in parts of Asia, Africa, and probably Europe. It could still trigger an influenza pandemic,” he said.Despite all of the developments that raise concerns, Domenech said his group has seen some positive trends.”Globally, much progress has been achieved in keeping the H5N1 virus under control. We are better prepared to deal with the disease than we were 3 years ago,” he said in the FAO statement. “Surveillance, early, detection, and immediate response have improved, and many newly infected countries have managed to eliminate the virus from poultry.”H5N1 returns to ThailandThe outbreak in Thailand is not included in the FAO’s total, but Thai livestock officials today announced that the H5N1 virus was detected in Nakhon Sawan province in the northern part of the country, about 188 miles north of Bangkok, according to a Bloomberg News report. However, a report that Thai officials filed yesterday with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said the H5 virus has been confirmed and that final test results are pending.According to the OIE report, the virus struck 4,085 broiler chickens at a commercial farm that is housed above a fish pond. The outbreak began on Jan 18, and the birds were tested as part of the country’s routine surveillance program. The remaining 55,585 birds were destroyed, the report said. Thailand’s last H5N1 outbreak occurred in June 2007, according to the OIE report.Country-specific outbreak observationsDomenech discussed aspects of outbreaks in several countries. He said India is struggling to control its worst-ever H5N1 outbreak. THE COUNTRIES OF THE WESTERN BALKANS ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE INTERESTING DESTINATIONS THE KINDNESS OF PEOPLE HAS NO COMPANY Tourism is not an industry but a platform for the placement of domestic products and services that would not be competitive on the open international market. In such a model of tourism development there is profit, earnings, progress, but it cannot be the first, only and most important motive for inclusion in tourist flows. PURPOSE OF TRAVEL If we ignore these facts, it can happen that tourist traffic grows and the community weakens, remains without income and without population, only to be unattractive in the end and replaced by another, new, tourist destination. That is why today we are talking more and more about managing a tourist destination. All the advanced countries have left the old model of tourist organizations that dealt exclusively with promotion. Tourist organizations in the most developed tourist countries function as development agencies. They are managed by representatives of several neighboring municipalities and cities. When traveling for vacation, the first motive is “sun and sea” (29%), followed by short-term visits to cities (29%), then tour trips (18%), trips to the countryside and mountains (8%), cruises by boat (3%) ). How to ensure a good standard of tourism staff and how to encourage the development of responsible and sustainable tourism that benefits the local community? Croatia, as the last associate member of the EU, has become a starting point for exploring the surrounding countries in a package of weekly and multi-week trips. Such trips were also encouraged by the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative, launched 19 years ago, which brings together Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Greece. On the platform of this initiative, cooperation projects financed from EU funds are created, and many of them rely on tourism through measures of rural development and cooperation in culture. The average number of overnight stays worldwide is 8. In North America it is 8,3, in South America 8,2, in Europe 8,2, and in Asia 7 overnight stays. A total of 10 foreign buyers are participating in the project, with 22 participants from the Zagreb area and 10 participants from the Kvarner area. In a few days, during organized networking gatherings, foreign buyers have the opportunity to meet members of the domestic congress industry. The aim of the project is to present Croatian congress facilities, the possibility of award trips and Croatia as an attractive team building destination, but also to create new connections and business opportunities. “Croatia MICE FAM Trip”, more precisely the inspection trip of foreign buyers from the markets of Austria, Germany, Spain, Great Britain, Poland, France and the Netherlands, will be held from 24 to 27 October 2019 in the city of Zagreb, Istria and Kvarner. The project is organized by the CNTB Congress Department in cooperation with the Zagreb Tourist Board and the Congress Office, then the Kvarner Tourist Board and the Opatija Congress Office, and the Istria Tourist Board. Virovitica Tourist Board financed the purchase of cotton masks with the sign of the Pejačević Castle and the inscription “Greetings from Virovitica”. The masks are intended for employees of accommodation facilities, but also for guests who, in addition to protection during their stay, also serve as a souvenir that they can take and thus further promote Virovitica. In addition, disinfectants and medical masks were distributed to all Virovitica landlords.
COVID-19 has left a mark on the number of arrivals and overnight stays. Therefore, the Tourist Board of the City of Virovitica has prepared a promotion by which visitors for each night spent in a registered commercial accommodation facility in the city of Virovitica in the period from September 15 to October 15, 2020 as a gift get a free ticket for Pejačević Castle and Virovitica City Museum. For this action, the Tourist Board is also financing a promotional campaign called “Experience the city of Pejačević” on social networks, portals and in the press. The coronavirus pandemic has caused numerous cancellations in Croatia and around the world. This resulted in reduced number of visits, ie arrivals and overnight stays of tourists in a large number of destinations, especially continental ones. One such destination is also Virovitica, whose tourist board has decided to redirect the funds provided for the events that have been canceled by the decisions of the Headquarters so far, to the implementation of the support plan for Virovitica landlords. Visibility This year has shown the importance of visibility, especially on the Internet, and it has also shown how a large number of renters have neglected this particular segment of business. Namely, some accommodation facilities do not have their own websites nor are they present on internet platforms. In order to help Virovitica landlords and increase their visibility to potential guests, the Tourist Board of Virovitica will finance website design all accommodation facilities in the City area. Listed the website will also be available in English. In addition to the website, it will also be activated Facebook and Instagram profiles of each individual accommodation facility.
